Setting up a server...

I have a few server related questions. One, what kind of computer makes a good server PC? Good CPU? Good RAM? It doesn't need a good video card, right? Two, how well will it work on a networked cable connection? It's a pretty good connection. If it doesn't work well on this connection I also might be able to talk a local LAN place into setting it up in the back room and hooking it up to their connection.
