Any one seen it? I think I wasn't even born when it came out, when did it come out? Was it good? I've only heard of it from the Seven Samurai 20XX game. And what were the Katana fighting scenes like? Were they as good as Jedi fight scenes? And what was the film quality like?
:bounce:

i've seen it, you can rent the dvd (it's criterion collection, so buying it will cost you probably). the dvd is cool because there some sort of bushido scholar that commentates it. it's a classic, but that's not to say it's necessarially "good". the fight scenes probably aren't what you're expecting, while apparently technically fairly accurate, there's no long, drawn-out samurai duels on the beach or anything like that. the seven samurai don't even ever fight other samurai, if i recall correctly. definitely worth a rent, but it doesn't sound like what you're thinking of.

It was OK, not great. Many other better movies.
It's like 3 hours long, and feels like 4-5 hours long. Sort of like watching gone with the wind in one sitting, without getting up, from beginning to end, with intermissions and overture etc...

Is the feeling like Lord of the Rings long? Lord of the Rings was about 3 hours but felt like 5. This is 204 minutes I heard.

well, personally i've never minded long movies.. if you felt like lotr was long, you probably won't enjoy seven samurai, it's much more methodical and slow-paced.

I hope somebody remakes Seven Samurai with up to date methods and kick-ass sword fights which are better than crouching tiger with out the flying and all...:/

i think you're missing the point :) what you say is near heresy for to film buffs.. remake seven samurai?!? blasphemer!

anyway, why do you hope for this? is there something about the plot of seven samurai that has you particularly fascinated? why not just make a whole new samurai movie?

But you see, Seven Samurai wasn't supposed to be an action hack-n-slash fest. It was a character study of seven samurai, each with a reason as to why they would protect an innocent villiage for basically no pay.
I thought it was a powerful and intense movie.
Called the 'first foreign epic', Kurosawa has influenced the likes of Tarantino, Sergio Leone, and war movies in general. The last 30 minutes is action-packed if that's what you're looking for. But on the whole, it is rather slow and yes long, but it never gets ponderous and bogged down because you truly care for these characters.
If you like good cinema, then you'll like "The Seven Samurai".

I remember another good samurai movie about this gate keeper samurai whos son is given the ex-wife of the local lord because she wasn't obedient enough. Anyways, so the son eventually learns to love her and they have a child, but then the lord's new wife dies and he wants his old wife back all of a sudden. So the samurai family refuses and the lord kills the son and the wife so the samurai takes the baby and goes psycho on the other dudes chopping them up and even killing his own best friend, but eventually modern fire arms kill him with about 8 shots. I think it had some sort of moral

'Samurai Rebellion' is the title, another great film

Tredoslop, what Javert says is pretty accurate regarding seven samurai. If you want kinetic sword fighting you probably want to look at the 'lone wolf and cub' series, beat takashi's recent revison of 'Zatoichi' is also worth a view.

If your after the more ponderous films 'twilight Samurai' is a good recent film, and 'yojimbo' and 'Sanjuro' are further examples of good classic kurosawa films.

heh, lone wolf and cub.. that series started my suspiscions of japanese entertainment. those suspiscions were confirmed years later when i first saw DBZ :)

LOTR is worth watching though...they are the best movies EVER

its a classic my dad just amazoned it along with shclinders list and some other sh1t

I liked it. I still watch it when I see it on TV. Good film.

I'm hankerin to get my hands on a copy, me and dad are both avid Kurosawa fans. Seen so far - Yojimbo, Sanjuro (fav so far), Throne of Blood and Ran. All classics.

Have to rent it sometime, like someone said it's freakin expensive on DVD... even though it is 3 hours long/has a bunch of extra content.
