Severe Freezing

When I play the game, about every 10 minutes or so, my game freezes. When I say freeze, it's bad. I cannot minimize the game, or close out of it any way. The only way to fix it is to restart my computer by holding in the power button for a few seconds.

I run a geforce 6600 at 256 mb
a gig of ram
and a pentium 4 at 3 ghz


I run most games fine, and even this game looks nice, this freezing just pisses me off. It gets extremely annoying after a while.


Does anyone know what do to about this?

only explanation would be your psu.
how long have you had your current set up?
made any recent changes to hardware or software?

About a year and a half. Nope. No major changes were made. This is the first thing installed for the past few months. I also reinstalled the game, but get the same results...

You have the newest video and sound drivers installed? Do you what your PSU temperature is when playing the game?

could be anything from faulty ram, to a broken vid card, wrong drivers or simply overheating. you'll have to rule out these factors. could be as simple as dust on your cpu fan. clean up your pc

I had the same problem....including lockups at the loading screens. I had to add the -dxlevel 70 command to the "launch application" feature to get the game to work again. I have no idea why my system and HL2 developed this problem 1+years after the game was released.....but something in DX9 and the recent HL2 updates simply don't agree with certain cards....regardless of whether the drivers are up-to-date or not.

I recommend this, I was having the same problem and this seems to help. It runs a test on your system and tells you what you need.
