I've lost my ability to receive anything from the internet, from web pages to messaging services. I'm currently posting this at my college. Anyway. sunday I was surfing the net, everything fine. All of a sudden I lost the connection for no reason. This happened on both my desktop and my laptop at the same time. It has to be a software issue.
I am on a DSL line that is running through a linksys router. a line from the router is going to a 4 port splitter in my room, 2 going to me and one to my sister. I know its not the dsl line or the router because her laptop still works, and both my computers and her desktop are no longer receiving anything. All the computers are coming from the same line from the linksys router. I have also tried connecting my laptop at school and the same thing happened.
I've gone into the network connections thing in the control panel and have looked at the settings. The are all set normal to find IPs and all that other stuff automatically. but when i check the status of the lan connection i'm getting an incorect IP, or no IP or DNS server or any of the other stuff in there. I've already tried disabling and re-enabling the lan connection, i've tried doing the "repair" thing and it doesn't fix it. I've done a system restore to the day I installed windows and it didn't fix it.
The thing says I'm not receiving any packets. AIM, MSN, yahoo, mozilla, IE are getting nothing. When i do a repair on the school's network I get the full list of IP, dns server stuff and the rest of the things that should show up, but It still isn't actually getting anything. I've also tried removing my NIC drivers and re-installing them to no avail.
I don't think that it is my ethernet cards or anything, I wonder if I got some kind of virus because it happened on my two comps simultaniously, my sisters desktop the day before. But her laptop and another of our PCs still work.
Should I try putting in a new NIC card to see if that fixes it, or should I just reformat and reinstall? cuz its like there is something on it that doesn't get removed during the system restore function. I could really use your help, anyone! This is so strange and I've never seen anything like it. Having no internet is driving me nuts, especially with all the news coming out about hl2 and such. it is also affecting my school work because I have to stay at school to do internet research, which limits my options of what I can do.
