...goes to show you most SFX magazine fans are stupid/dont know what they're talking about:

Space thriller Serenity has beaten Star Wars to the title of best sci-fi movie in an SFX magazine poll of 3,000 fans.

ok that isnt all that bad ..they're equally vapid popcorn fare and little else but ...

Blade Runner was third, followed by Planet of the Apes, The Matrix, Alien and Forbidden Planet.

third? it should be first

their top 10:

1. Serenity
2. Star Wars
3. Blade Runner
4. Planet of the Apes
5. The Matrix
6. Alien
7. Forbidden Planet
8. 2001: A Space Odyssey
9. The Terminator
10. Back to the Future

personally I dont think numbers 1, 2 should even be in the top 10 ..although I admit I havent watched Serenity ..from what I have seen it looks like a western set in space ..not really science fiction ..same goes for Star wars ..more saturday serial/space opera than science fiction

How the hell did Serenity beat any of those movies.....

And why the hell isn't 2001 number one

Read about it yesterday. The poll isn't valid if Blade Runner isn't first.

a western set in space populated by sci-fi cliches

/me stands ground

:E

not to mention that the rest of those movies have had much more time to establish themselves as classics then Serenity. Id like to see how well it holds up after forty and twenty years respectively.

I watched it...nothing special tbh

Serenity????? *waves the WTF flag furiously*

Star Wars would've been a fairly obvious winner to be honest

sure serenity wons for the bunch of fans that where unhappy whit the cancelation of the series and them bombarded the poll,or hav bad taste

havent watched blade runner

Its a popularity contest. It would be Star Wars if it hadn't been for the prequels, and now it just passes to the series that many of the Star Wars fans moved too. Doesn't surprise me in the least. Oh, and I loved Serenity as a Firefly fan so nyah. :D

Serenity, while good, really isn't anything compared to the other films on that list. Firefly may beat all of them, but Serenity does not.

I would also put Firefly on that list but if Serenity is on there at all it should be in one of the last 3 spots.

Also, Blade Runner can never be usurped as king of scifi cinema.

Really need to watch Bladerunner again.

Err yeah, Serenity, rah rah rah, etc.

I still don't get 2001: A Space Odyssey. What's the meaning of the film?

Serenity is mostly just good because it nicely wraps up the storyline of the much better tv series.

I'm with the other Firefly fans here. Despite being an insane firefly fan, I don't think Serenity should have even placed there. I'm not a fan of Star Wars either (though I accept the early movies' merit on some accounts), but then again, I can't really think of a Sci-Fi to replace them. Fifth Element perhaps? I love that movie.
EDIT: Stern, how the deuce have you not seen Firefly yet? Watch it.

As much as I love Firefly and enjoyed Serenity, there's no way either should stand over Blade Runner in such a poll. Not only is Blade Runner awesome, it's so awesome I recently bought an original quad poster that was on display at the cinema during its launch. It's the most awesome thing I own :)

I prefered 2010 over 2001. But still it wasn't really going of the book, they made a lot of changes.

question, is Space Oddesey related in anyway to Uplift?

I enjoyed 2001 alot but I found it to be boring at many points. I haven't seen 2010 yet, how is it in comparison?

I think it's better. Yest it's also got a slow pace but I found it overall more entertaining and

*SPOILER* Jupiter implodes and turns into a second sun *SPOILER*

And the special effects are stunning considering when the film was made.

2010 has none of the cinematic brilliance of 2001 ...Peter Hyams is by no means equal to Stanley Kubrick ...I mean he directed Timecop ffs

Kubrick and Clarke created the story together simultaneously, the movie was actually released before the book. The stories are quite parallel imo, the film is suppost to be more ambiguous. What's happening is all through your interpretation. I havn't watched another movie that has done this so effectively.

2001 > Blade Runner
Blade Runner > Everything else

Their both awesome.
