I've been having this problem recently. It didn't used to happen, but hey, now it does. Anybody know what's up? It only happens in the darkest of shadows. Instead of a black shadow being there, a dark, red color will.

its happened every now and then to me once. try updating or changing your video drivers.

I've done that about ten times; nothing seems to work. Anybody else have this problem?

i have it too i have tried posting threads about it but nothing has fixed it yet. id love it to be fixed

AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+
2 GIG DDR Ram
Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS 512 DDR

We don't seem to have anything in common. Have you heard anything else? When did yours start happening? Mine was soon after a STEAM update.

I faintly remember this something to do with drivers. Try out the Omega Drivers (www.omegadrivers.net) and see if it makes any difference.

I've done the driver dance. I haven't downloaded the OMEGA ones. But why should I? The last one for Nvidia was made almost 3 years ago.

Interesting point:

When I turn the flashlight on, all the red goes away and it turns back to normal.

Yea it only happens with me in the dark. I dont get it and it shits me off so hard. I dont think its a driver thing, i have a bad feeling we may have damaged videocards? its been happenin for ages for me now but it happened all of a sudden, it was perfect wen i bought it.

Well, I figured out a way to kinda hide it. You should go to the NVIDIA display optimize function and follow the directions exactly. After that, I used the 93.71 drivers (installing in safe mode and completely deleting the old drivers), and then installed the very same drivers again over the fresh install (after re-starting, etc).

Other than that, I just don't know what it could be. We're certainly not the only ones with this problem. Don't be so quick to blame the cards. I've switched out for 2 seperate cards, both coming up with the same errors.

yea um I have tried running that optimization thing but it doesnt really work too well at fixing the problem, i have got omega drivers, but i have tried countless amounts of drivers.

Those OMEGA drivers are years old- I think almost 4. I wouldn't trust those with Nvidia if that's what you're running. The optimization wizard, if done right, would only hide the problem as I've said. For me, I can't notice it now. Maybe it was the wizard, maybe it was the countless re-installs over re-installs.

Okay enough is enough i cannot take this anymore im formatting lol and re installing it. If this doesnt fix it, then im blaming steam or a damaged video card, ill report back with my results.

well I formatted my pc, re installed half life 2 and still have the problem this leads me to believe its a hardware problem. Correct me if I am wrong but it couldnt be software could it?

Of course it could be software. I've done the re-install and everything. Heck, I've even tried 2 other video cards -one Nvidia and the other ATI. Still, I had the same problem.

It could be hardware or software compatibility. If you do the optimizer and darken the screen according to the instructions, it hides it really, really well. I play the game now and it doesn't bother me hardly as much.

Well it didnt fix my problem, the thing is my monitor wont let me use the auto sync thing that it asks you to do in the display optimization wizard. I'll try it though.

Well the display optimization wizard seems to have almost fixed it completely, I think the brightness must have been WAY to high before. Ill play it some more and see if it has indeed fixed it.

well the problem still persists but not as badly, i just ordered a new video card (i neededto update) so this might also fix it , if not im not fussed thats not why i got the card

What was your card before? The wizard really solved the problem for me. I guess in cases where I can tell it still exists...I can close my eyes. A new card won't work, but hopes for you, man. : )

My card was a Geforce 7600 GS I just bought a 8600GT hasnt come yet, but i dont care if it doesnt fix the problem i just want better fps...

That should get you better FPS, but it might not be enough to warrant the pricetag. You can always check and compare reviews online!
