Hey all, I'd like some crits on this model. You know, pats on the back and such.. :)

It's a Mossberg 590 "Compact Cruiser" and it's the first real model I've been able to do in XSI | EXP, so be nice... It's also the second gunmodel I've ever done, the first one was in 3dsMax a few months ago.

In EXP, I can only render teeny weeny renders, and I can't seem to save them or anything, so what you'll be looking at are sprint screens of the EXP workarea, sorry if they aren't any good...

PS. It's not really for a game/HL2, I'd probably have to redo most of if it were to be used ingame.

Edit: I didn't even have a 'decent' pic of the sight, so I didn't model it..

it says "XSI DEMO" all over it, very nice model though

The modelling looks all pretty decent. The exceptions to this are you wasted a lot of polygons on the handle, and the modelling looks a bit sloppy on the ball-shaped object in the front underneath the barrel. There should not be as many segments in the handle that you have now. Also the smoothing looks a little off, did you smooth this yourself or was it automatically done?

yeah man, looks pretty nice, although the handle has a lot of polys in it, but you're a beginner so ill let you off :p, and the front bit looks a bit...deformed. is the grip a load of extrusions, cause if it is, for later reference id give you some tips on poly count.

also, if you think about it, you need to spread out your use of polys a bit better. i mean youve got...god knows how many, maybe 200-400 polys in the handle, which is going to be covered by your hand most of the time but youve got only 8 sides to your barrels. same applies to the knob on the front, the trigger guard and the front grip. that said, its a pretty nice model, and with a bit of tweaking, it could be even better...or you could start another model, bearing those things in mind :)

keep going, and HAVE FUN

I did know the placemement of polies was crazy before I posted it, just thought I should hear what you guys had to say about anyway... :)

It was pretty much just a exercise in modeling, to get to grips with the XSI tools... But thanks for the crits, they'll come in hando for when I do model for ingame usage!

Oh, and I haven't done anything concerning smoothing, I don't really know (haven't tried) anything in XSI except the modeling tools.

the round thing... I don't know.. when I followed the picture, the whole shotgun was weird, the barrels were at an angle... the round thing seems to be like that, from what I saw in the pic, but I'm not sure...

Anyways, thanx for your help! You'll be seeing more of me :)
