Should HL2 be taking 1500 minutes to launch?

I just bought the game this morning off of steam, and now (4 hours later) its still at 5% and saying it needs another 1500 minutes to finish...

What is going on here? I checked the server status, and they are only at like 20% capacity...

I just want to play the game

That would be because you havent preloaded the game yet, and you are downloading the entire thing, which is like 4gb or something.

my pc is the following

P4 @ 2.66GHz
512MB ram
120gb hdd
radeon 9800 pro
dvd-rom, blah blah

I forgot to mention that im on campus as well. THe connection is a 45mb/s internet2 line. Ive tried deleting the clientregistry.blob file, still no game...

internet2 is a super fast university line

and i should be getting close to 400 or 500 kb/s

Valve said that if your behind a campus firewall you might have problem running Steam. Or something like that, I don't exactly remember.

so its not on my end and i should call up the IT people then?

You could ask the people resposible for you connection or take your PC somewhere where there might not be a problem.

Another possible option is that if you know someone else with a complete copy of HL2 installed from Steam, CD or DVD, I think you can also copy their cache files installed on their harddrive to your machine and cut out most of the download. Some files are bigger than will fit on a single CD, though, so they'd need to use WinRAR to split them or just use a DVD.

yep, university firewalls are messing things up.

I'd just give it a night to download if I was you.
