OK, so Ive read all the reviews and stuff on the internet. But i still don't know whether i should buy the Radeon 9800 pro 256MB. I mean, it truly is a waste of money but in this case money isn't exactly a problem. No, I'm not a rich bugger but it doesn't matter if i spend an extra £100.

On the very maximum settings it appears to perform better, and it might be more apparent in later games after Doom III and such.

So, do you people think i should get it?

(Wow, this post makes me sound like a real nonce or something.)

It's up to you...

If I read some revieuws I see that there is only a very small difference between the 128mb and the 256mb version. It was from tomshardware.com... Maybe with DOOM3 128 mb VS 256mb I could see the difference

AT this time there aren't many games that really requires the 128mb extra mememory.... I will go for the 128mb version.. I am sure I could easely overclock the 9800 pro in the futere.

If money is not the problem I should wait for the 9900 serie

I would say no... Because by the time we really use 256mb, the card itself will be old. You'll want a new card by then (saving those $100 to get a fancier upgrade instead). Even now 128mb is hardly needed.
It depends on how long you intend to keep running the card...

My general opinion is still to hold off major purchases (if one got a G4 or higher) until we see how PCI Express get introduced. Of course, if one got the money and dont want to wait, then buy whatever you wish :)

Id say its not worth the money.

like dawdler said...by the time games can really make use of it you will be able to buy something much faster.

You will be plenty happy with the 128 version.

well, what is your current card that you need to repleace? If you need a card for HL2, and you have the money i'd say by all means. But if you have the money, get the AIW version, and play with that :)

At 1024 x 768 I believe the Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB out preforms the 256 MB.

Well im replacing the whole computer. But the current card is a GeForce 2...:x

I'm getting a new computer next week and I decided to get the Radeon 9800 Pro 128. From what I've heard its a great card and it runs very smoothly. I think I'll be pleased with the choice I've made. There won't be much a difference between the 128 and the 256, atleast I don't think there will. You should just go for the 128 and buy yourself something nice with the extra money. For example, I bought a new chair. A good chair lol.

id say go for it... go for the best you can afford... because even though games dont make "full" use of it now its pretty damn handy because i reckon doom3 and farcry etc will love the extra 128 meg of gfx card ram :D

TheRook

p.s. i believe if i remember correctly in one of the emails on the valve info topic they said they would make something or other to make use of the 256 meg cards... so it would be worth getting...

Yeah your gunna want a nice new comfy chair, ohh and Invest in some nice headphones also! I got some altech lansing 50 dollar headphones and they are unbelieveable.

*edit- ZOMBIE yay, congrats to me!

hmm. Call Of Duty is the first game coming out that supports 256 for the highres textures, although ive heard they run on a 128 card.

I personally dont think you will need a 256 card for a long time, and in a year there will be a card that dominates the 9800, maybe even 512 cards.

So dont bother for now unless you can spare the extra 100 bucks.

yes, get the 256mb version :)

the economy needs a boost and big spenders are what we need!!! ;)

lol okay seriously.. i think u should get it.. at max setttings, HL2 will run like a horse.. and like u mentioned, later games may run smoother too..

besides i think theres another reason besides the obvious one (making money) why they have a 256mb version.. ya, sure they wanna make money but hell the card is more expensive too.. must have something in it to run games better.

That has got to be the worse analogy ever. Seriously dude, by your way of thinking Pentiums should be much faster than Athlon XP's cause they have higher numbers everywhere and are more expensive. 256MB is a gimmick to entice rich people or people with little knowledge of what's going on.

Why is it that there's a 256MB version of the Geforce FX 5200, Radeon 9600, and Geforce FX 5600? Are they going to perform extremely higher than their 128MB counter-parts like you say because they're more expensive? Seriously... if getting 256MB is useless on a Radeon 9800 pro, you'd think that goes for ALL cards at this point in time. Atleast in the highest spectrum of the video card market, getting the best could mean getting the card with more memory, regardless if it performs .4% extra which isn't worth it. However, when we're talking slow ass cards that can't even cope with 128MB, adding more memory won't save them.

When a card comes out ONLY in 256MB versions... it'll have the speed to use all that RAM, and there will be games that can push that kind of hardware.
