should i buy an X-box for my Birthday?

i have estimated that for my Bithday (august the 3rd!) i will get somewhere between £180 - £240.

Now i could either A) spend this money on games and stuff, B) save the money and spend it gradually over the year- or C) Buy an X-box and a couple of games, then put the remaining money in a big box that says "halo 2 fund".

heres the current situation:
i have £35, a PC capable of running HL2 fine on medium graphics (probally), a Camecube and a few nintendo games, and a half broken PS2 (i have no games for it as its about to blow up any second now!).

Now there are a number of games i wouldnt mind buying an X-box for:
Ninja gaiden, Halo2, possibly Halo for Co-op even though i have the PC version, SWKOTOR 2, Splinter cell 3, that racing game everyone is crazy about, and probally more when i think of them.

The thing is, most of these games are coming out on the PC after X-box... and i have a good PC allready..... Also, soes anyone know whether X-box games work on a 50hz telly? coz my TV is about 10 years old, and i dont really want to go into my lounge everytime i want to play halo2 :/ Also, do i really need an X-box with a PC and GC?

AAAAAAAAAARRRGGGHHH i dont know what to do. at the moment im about 35% for buying an X-box, 60% for saving the money, and 5% on spending it all at once on loads of crap things

this will be an interesting thread methinks....

My 2 cts.: upgrade your pc so it runs HL2 on high graphics. Thats money better spent, expecially considering XBOX2 is on its way.

Replace the PS2...im sure you'll get alot more gameplay and fun from a proper racing game, Gran Turismo4 ..you'll be able to play GTA4 before any xbox people, a proper stealth game with gripping gameplay/storyline MGS3.

Dunk the PS2...it has a couple of intresting titles but it's rule is over. Don't buy a new one either - the ps3 is very well on it's way, so wait.

Xbox has a lot of good titles coming up, on the other hand. Definately get yourself one of these, I get to play good games on PC and xbox - best yet almost all titles get a port here and they are graphically superior (with definately MUCH BETTER AA) than the other two consoles. Gamecube is also a good buy, but you already have it - so good.

Don't upgrade the PC as it can run HL2, you'll find big time PC whores who are very biased and will force you to upgrade and say crap about consoles. What's better? a console and a good enough PC or just a good PC?

Of course, the first one. Because you'll have a lot more variety of games.

i have a gamecube, and i love it

my PS2 is about to break, but im willing to risk it just to play a tiny bit of san andreas. even if i play it for an hour before my PS2 implodes and creates a giant black whole that will inevitable consume us all, ill be happy

same with MGS3, me loves0rs it

im probally just going to save the money. ill have to wait till christmas till i get anything like this huge amount in one go anyway, so i wouldnt want to spend it all at once...

meh, im not sure.. :S

You could spend a bit of the money getting the PS2 fixed.
It'll be cheaper than getting a new PS2 and you'll be able to play the new GTA.

Buy a decent graphics card and an under-ripe lime.

Get an S-video cable, Plug it into your tv.

Cut the lime in half then slice it diagonally twice, like a cross.

Glue lime to PC case.

Pretend you're playing HL2 in full detail on an x box.

For the record: the Xbox2 and PS3 aren't really "on the way." They're going to be announced NEXT E3, and then we all have to wait for them to actually come to market, which will take at least a year from now. In addition they're going to cost a hell of a lot when they first hit too. I wouldn't consider them a factor at this point.

It depends on what games you like. Halo 2 is an obvious one. PES 4 (best sports game ever!) is coming out for the XBox too - so if yu're a footy fan (and don't have a PS2) you'll be laughing

A console is also good for games like KOTOR, GTA, PoP, Thief, Splinter Cell etc. I know these are available on the pc, but they are more suited to analogue control, imo (and are better 'console' games)

There's Fable and B.C. coming out, Viewtiful Joe (for those who missed it on the GC), and many action/social type games.

Consider the GC too - if only for Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime 2. God damn those games look amazing

Xbox is a good investment. Halo 2, Fable alone is going to be a great game. Just be sure to get Xbox Live too, otherwise it's not worth it.

I vote NO, only because it doesnt warrant a purchase....
I have an XBOX, and the only 3 decent games on it are, HALO, RIDDICK and SPLINTER CELL.

you should rather rent the system than buy it.. even with Halo2, and Fable coming out (the promise of which last year made me buy the damn console) its not worth it.
XBOX 2 will be out soon, rather hold out for that (hopefuly they can get more 3rd party support)

I would say wait for the next consoles to come out, of if you can't wait that long then just buy some more stuff for you PC.

Or, do something non related to computers with the money, like take a trip to another country on the cheap

still not sure... if i found one second hand for a decent amount, id snap it up

full price is a little much though, especially as there is only one game i want for it that wont at some point be released on GC / PC...

once and almost completed ff9.
thats all i play at the moment i cant bring myself from them.

Anyway back on topic. Im going to have to agree with farrow, just spend it on pc and then get a ps3 /xbox 2/ one of the 2 uber handheld consols coming out in few years

Even if the next xbox commes out for xmas 2005, it will take at least one year before enough good games are out to make it worth buying and it might not be backward compatible. It is not at all too late to buy one now, there are alot of good games already available and a lot that will soon be available.
