As above, it's my last day at my current job today, and my workmates have all chipped in and got me a game gift card, with which i can get left 4 dead.

Before i continue i will say that i am a COMPLETE pussy when it comes to horror games, i cant even play a silent hill game, and the ravenholm level of half life 2 is about as brave as i get.

So should i get L4D? I mean, i love co-op games, and i love shooting but is L4D going to be too scary? I think what i dont like about silent hill is that it's so unpredictably scary, and it's quite sick (zombie babys etc).

So i guess my question is, is it exciting kind of scary, or is it "holy **** you dont want to see what's over there" scary?

Its kinda inbetween. Hunters are scary, and having a Tank plough over toward you is kinda 'Ohhhhh ************!!!!', but adrenaline scary more than horror scary.

I dunno. It is definitely scary the first time you play, in some areas anyway, but once youve played through it, you get calmer.

Its more of a 'how the hell can we survive all this!?' game than something like Silent Hill.

This game is only 'scary' when you do a first run through, but only the sense of scary because you will jump at some things that you didn't know were there. Just get through the game a couple of times and you won't really be scared anymore.

Yes, it isn't a "true" horror games, it's a action-survival game placed into a post-apocalyptic horror scene. It's a great game, definitely buy it.

Like what? The gas station blowing up? Oh shit, that's scary! :D

There aren't really any scares that always occur in the same place, are there?

once you get used to freaky-ass zombies tackling you out of the darkness you won't be scared anymore

It is alot scarier first time you play it than when you've played through it a few times and its like 'Oh no....a tank ... T.T'

Yeah, then it's just the scare of zombies and bosses popping out nowhere. Like "oh-my-god-where-did-that-boomer-come?"

after few rounds, it will get scary on two scenarios:

1-Tank
2-Boomer explodes next to you, or puke on you.

Excellent replies guys, thanks.

I think i'm going to get it, i've gotten better over the years, and i enjoyed Bioshock (for example) and didn't find it too scary.

Final question - which platform should i get it for? I could get the pc version for my laptop, or get the 360 version and play it on my 40" tv.

Is the 360 version horribly crippled compared to the pc version? The main thing i like about pc games (tf2 etc)is that you can join lobbies etc rather than just being matched.

So i guess what i'm asking is, is the 360 version any good?

I know pc will be better, but my laptop will only run it on med settings, and i'd be using a 360 controller anyway if i got it for pc.

360 version is exactly the same and in no way lackluster compared. It's all down to personal preferences at the end of the day but it's probably one of my favourite games of 2008 and I'm a 360 user, so it's pretty damn good. You get the SDK for the PC version though, so make of that what you will. The only difference I found in the game was the controls which are obviously going to be different and that again comes down to personal preference. Other than that, it's identical.

The only parts that have made me jump in L4D are when Hunters have pounced me from a dark corner (usually Verses) or when I've gone to clear a room and there's been a lone zombie standing behind the door that I missed in my sweep when I've wandered in to get some supplies. Half Life 2 and it's Episodes make me jump ALOT, but L4D is no where near anything of the sort simply because it's atmosphere and pacing is much more focuses on adrenaline and fast paced combat whereas the locations of Half Life are often slowed down (which is in no way a bad thing)

As a PC user, I have to say L4D 360 is one of the best FPS console ports around. I hate playing Halo 3 on the Xbox, but I don't mind L4D at all. It basically has the same functionality, and Valve even tailor-made some aspects of it (e.g. there's a button on the 360 version that makes you do a 180' spin).

There's not much between the two games, the main difference is which platform your friends have it on, because the game is double the fun with friends. If the people who are gonna be able to play it with you are on PC, then get it on PC.

If it's really still a toss-up, then get it on PC for the user-created maps and mods. There's already a Survival Mod for L4D doing the rounds that makes the game more like a survival horror.

The commoners will rarely scare you, i love Left 4 Dead personally but i hate how many zombies there are, i mean they stop being scary quickly because there are too many danm zombies. Other then that, turning a corner to see a hunter pouncing at you or a boomer ready to let loose can make you jump, but that's about it. There's not much gore unless you get like 50 witches in one room or you go to the basement of that house in Blood Harvest...

If your friends don't have it on the 360, I'd get it for the PC, because of the better support from Valve.

I only have one steam friend (i don't really add random people i play with) and i have about 15 friends on xbox live but none of them play L4D.

If i get it am i able to just join a party of 3 other players? Presumable loners like myself can just be assigned with other loners?

I guess i'll be flamed at first for being a noob!

Thanks for the input guys, im going to get it tomorrow on the 360, simply because my laptop won't play it on high settings.

Anyone wanna teach me a thing or two?!

Yeah, you're randomly assigned 3 people to play with if you enter the lobby on your own; 7 people if go into Verses. Grab a friend on Live and he can join you in the lobby and off you go, etc

What do you want to know? Have a search round this section of the forum, there's plenty of awesome tales from the game which are full of helpful hints and tips.

There are lobbies sort of like TF2, but pretty different. My gamertag is Discord9, but I'm usually in a party or in a game with friends. Play the campaign before playing versus.

Yeah i will do, coop is the main reason i'm getting it, although i'll try versus at some point!

TF2 is crap on the 360, which is why i was worried L4D would be the same. There aren'tmany tf2 players on 360 though. and 8v8 sucks!

L4D is worlds apart from the 360 TF2 - don't worry. There's hundreds of players for L4D and I've never a problem finding a game.

If you are worried about the lack of friends to play with, you have us. Most of us who play all the time on the PC are VERY helpful and teamwork oriented. I say MOST, btw. Jump in the hl2net chat, hit some people up. I'm usually up for it if I'm around.

I personally would say do the PC route. You will get future mods, skins, and you have a huge community that have the game for PC. If you are really going ot go the 360 route, then that will be just fine...from what I hear. I have no personal experience with it.

Guise, Guise! i have it!

Playing now, will let you know if i have a nervous breakdown!

Oh my good god, what an amazing game!

The only problem is when guys are being stupid, there was one guy that kept jumping off the hospital on purpose so we had to get him up, then he killed our team mate!

Also, i managed to set a car alarm off and instead of sneaking round a witch, i shot her!

French guy on my team was like "Merde"!

lol, im still laughing at the poll.

can those even be compared?

I wonder what the poll results would look like if he had posted it on a Viva Pinata forum.

I seriously want to get Left 4 Dead, 2 problems however: 1stly my mum isn't a great fan of more violent/gory games, especially zombie ones, and 2ndly any cash I'm saving right now is going towards getting a new computer. shame, tis' such a great game (I've played the demo).

but to awnser your question, well, obviously I'll say (and vote) L4D.

If Bioshock didn't shake you, Left 4 Dead won't in any way. You may panic at your first boomer rush, only to find yourself saying "Coooooooooool!" as soon as it's done. The game is thrilling, not shock scary.

Also Viva Pinata is awesome, but the garden ends up being a lot smaller than you think it is. Go with Left 4 Dead for now.

What system did you end up getting it for?

I've decided that i will get both, i got the 360 version today.

It's one of those games that if i'm away from the house for a week i will miss it!

I finished no mercy earlier, despite having a bunch of retards on my team (one guy only had 30 health points that are temporary and he wouldn't take a healthpack! Duuuuuuur!)

Death toll here i come!

Oh don't get me wrong dude, when i got it and played the first 10 minutes it scared the shit out of me. But i kept playing and i settled down, and once i realised there was nothing that was all that scary in the game i got right into it.

I own that on both 360 and pc also, although i'll probably give someone my pc version, with no online there's no point keeping it.

The Mrs goes home in 10 mins, i cant wait! More L4D!

Wait, you don't have internet on your computer...?
