I'm watching Sicko it really shows what is wrong with our "Health care system" which basically is non existent. All these Companies makes all this ****ing money and deny claims from people witn friggin cancer and I can't imagine how many people died because of this...just because they can't pay it imho it should be free! It sickens me to watch these stories. They really need to get rid of these Companies who have essentially murdered people denying them care even though in alota cases they did have insurance, thats just ****ed up.

discuss.

Did you have any idea how terrible the health care system in America is before you watched this film?

Sadly it's not much better in countries with so called "free healthcare" where you have to wait in line for 2 hours just to be told they won't treat you because your case isn't severe enough etc etc. It's either you front up loads of cash or the govt. turns it all into a triage system. Although things could be done better here, a lot of people complain when in reality they have no idea of new ideas that would actually work.

I have never heard of that happening in sweden, of cource there has been mistakes but I have never heard of this. And the long lines can greatly be attributed to an extreme shortage in doctors, they clearly need to open more positions in the medical education. When having a perfect grade is no guarantee that you will get a slot in the medical education something needs to be done.

I haven't seen sicko, but even back in '93 during the push for state health (anyone calling it free healthcare should be ****ing shot :p) there were serious problems with American healthcare. Even the NHS, which has just come out of a huge budget upset and is constantly being threatened with privatisation, is leaps and bounds ahead America's current system.

Of course, the likelihood that anything will be pushed through congress in the face of what will inevitably be the largest lobbying effort in American history is pretty slim.

American Health care sucks.....no arguing there

Yeah, when the norm is to go to Canada if you feel sick, there's a problem somewhere.

that might be true in the UK or elsewhere but not so in canada ..if you need life saving treatment you are on the priority list. Healthcare works like a triage: the most severe cases are looked at first ..so while I may have to wait 2 months for an abdominal ultrasound (I have/had heart burn, shut up) appointent had I had cancer and needed chemo to survive it would have been within a few days. In an non free healthcare enviroment I'm at the mercy of the insurance company ..if they feel exploratory tests might not fit within my plan I may have to fork over cash to get it done myself ..pls they chose the time and place ..when my wife was pregnant with our last child we saw one of the worlds leading neo-natal specialists (past problems) ..this wouldnt be the case in the US where insurance companies dictate what doctor I can see ..I'd much rather a specialist than a doctor who works for an insurance company who may just have general knowledge

oh and had my son been born in the US and I was uninsured I'd owe the hospital in excess of $300,000 ..I'd litterally be paying that money for the rest of my life

Sidewinder ..is Sicko in theaters? or is it a "yo ho ho and a bottle of rum, mateys" release?

It's the same here too. Despite the long waits for certain operatons, the NHS offers a great service and I couldn't credit the doctors, nurses and other staff enough. My friends mum collapsed the other day - a bust something in the liver - and an hour or two later she was in intensive care and getting the treatment she needed. The same with my grandad - some heart troubles and he was opened up and sewn shut within the week.

The problem we're having in the uk is with its citizens not showing any bloody respect. Nurses and ambulance drivers being attacked and the assailant/s getting away with it completely. I actually saw chavs throwing stones at an ambulance the other day and have witnessed a couple of fights in a&e that dragged various staff into the brawl. I mean wtf?!

I cant even begin to understand why someone would do that ...and I suspect UK healthcare is much like canada ..it's an assumed presumption that people have to wait for life saving medical intervention ..ussually propogated by those without socialised healthcare ..I fully suspect that that inaccuracy will become more predominate once Sicko hits wide release as many american right wingers use that justification when attacking socialism

It's a Muppet Treasure Island kind.

And because of that, it premieres today in New York City and Washington DC.

It's a "yo ho ho and a bottle of rum, mateys release ^___^
very easy to find, and it a DVD rip.

here is becoming like that.

a few days ago, a man went to the doctor because his chest hurt, but he didn't have the health card updated (insurance) so the nurse ordered him to go to the electronic card dispenser (to have his card updated) which was on the other side of the street. With no choice the man went but after few steps from the main door the man collapsed and died. Everything was recorded by the security camera. He was found some time after when a couple saw him lying on the parking lot.

Our healthcare is going down the drain.

I wont disagree that America's health system is totally and completely off wack, I just don't know exactly what would work here. :\

Yeah, the NHS is great, but all the funding goes to the silly buisnessmen who run it (and waste the money), not the doctors, so the amount of lifesaving treatment is nowhere near as good as it could be.

I utterly love how quick us Brits are to complain about the NHS. On the other hand, let's consider how they'd react if it was done away with in favour of a US-style system.

I have epilepsy. The medication I depend upon to get me through day-to-day life is completely free to me, supplied by the NHS. I once worked out approximately how much this would have cost me (since then, the figure will have risen as my period of treatment has been extended) and it was about ?6,000 (approx $12,000 US or 9,000 Euros) over a couple of years. I'm not sure how much it'd be now, but I'd add at least another grand onto that.
My point is that life hasn't dealt me the greatest hand, in that respect, and it seems an outright travesty that because of that I should have to pay for the privelege of not having seizures which could endanger my life.

The same goes for diabetics - their insulin is supplied by the NHS.

Does this sound like a shitty healthcare system?

The papers are so often filled with figures/stories about unclean hospitals, dreadful waiting lines, horror stories of doctors' mis-haps/mis-diagnoses and God-knows-what-else.
These totally overlook the millions of people who are, each day, easily able to see their GP, correctly diagnosed, successfully treated/operated on/cured and tirelessly cared for by exemplary medical staff in good hospitals.
And all without the patients having to worry about not being able to afford it.

I know I'm labouring a point that has been made a hundred times before, but for every time this point's made, a thousand other short-sighted dolts complain about what a dreadful medical system we have.

The brits that are interviewed in this movie praise the NHS.
looked like a good idea to me as well...I wish we had the same thing :(

Wait.. how the hel* did sidewinder get banned?!

I noticed he was banned this morning, but he appears to have posted since then... hacks? :shh:

I think people complain that the service isn't good enough, rather than wishing an American style system imposed upon us.

Then again, we're not really a country associated with service culture.

"Waiter, waiter, there's a fly in my soup"
"**** off, ****"

Oh we Brits do love to complain. It's our second favourite pastime, behind (ironically enough) queuing. And then we complain about the queue.
