Looks like Sean Bean is going to be killed again

This is weird. Silent Hill 1 (the game) had Harry Mason chase after his daughter Cheryl Mason. In Silent Hill (the movie) we had the daughter renamed to Sharon Da Silva and Sean Bean was cast as he father, Christopher Da Silva but his role in the story was minimal and replaced with Sharon's mother, Rose Da Silva.

Now there's a sequel coming out with Sean Bean and Radha Mitchell reprising their roles from the first film except that now the names seem to have been corrected to Harry Mason and Heather Mason (this is correct, don't ask) for the daughter. Also, despite barely having a role in the first film (his character was apparently added after the producers realised there were no men in the original script) he's apparently important in the sequel. Also the ending of the first film implied that
Rose and Sharon were dead/trapped in the otherworld.

I'm guessing the corrected names are supposed to be false ones that they've taken up to hide from the evil cult from the game, who are totally different in the first film and who don't want to summon a god, just kill Alessa, so the plot is going to have to be even more different from the game to fix that!

Also, it's in 3D.

I figured it was a movie about the third game, I don't recall a second one.

It's a film based on the game Silent Hill 3. It's only the second Silent Hill film.

Oh.

Isn't the second game kind of highly regarded? Seems odd to skip it.

The second game is a completely separate story to the first and doesn't include any of the same characters or monsters. Silent Hill 3 is the real sequel to the first game, the second is just a side-story.

I really hate how the newer games started to borrow ideas from the movie rather than sticking to the older games themes, this will probably give who ever the hell is producing them now more ammunition :(

I thought Homecoming was the only one that borrowed from the movie? I've only played Silent Hill 2 and Shattered Memories (but I wish I'd played the others :p) so that's only based on what I've read.

Shattered Memories is excellent by the way if you haven't played it and has nothing at all to do with the movie. It doesn't really have much to do with the rest of the series either, but it's still a great game, if very different.

First movie wasn't absolutely terrible, managed to creep me out a fair bit and I really liked the atmosphere of it.

Yeah, I didn't mind the Silent Hill movie. Definitely one of the better video game adaptations.
