Trailer

Silent Hunter® 5 key features:

• VIEW AS A CAPTAIN: Walk through highly detailed submarines in the new first-person view and access every part of your U-boat.
• BECOME A REAL LEADER: Interact with your crew, watch them perform their daily jobs and experience the tension and fear inside the U-boat through the new advanced order system.
• WAR STRATEGIES: Choose your own strategy and select your targets with a new objective-driven, dynamic campaign.
• ENEMY REACTIONS: Open new locations, upgrades and resupply possibilities, while the Allied ships adjust dynamically to your approach. Your actions will directly impact the evolution of the campaign.
• NEW USER INTERFACE: Prowl the waters with a brand-new user interface. Now, every beginner can successfully command a sub while remaining free of confusion. In expert mode, experienced players will be provided all the necessary information and controls to command the sub completely on their own.
• CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE: Experience the most realistic and immersive Silent Hunter ever created. Improved environment graphics create a powerful level of immersion as you operate authentic, highly detailed U-boats and fight against surface ships.
Silent Hunter®5 is scheduled for release in early 2010.

I can only speak for myself when I say, **** YEAH!

They must either sell alot of copies or have a small bugdet to make the game :P

But regardless, I can't wait.

**** yeah! And thankfully we're going back to the Atlantic again. I prefer U-Boots over the Americans in the Pacific theatre.

Also, it seems like this time around, there will be no magically respawning ships, as in, if you for example sink one of the UKs more famous battleships, it will remain sunk, and this can alter the course of the war, maybe even letting you win it.:D

The dynamic campaign was one of the few things I actually liked about SH4.

Oh God oh God.

I just bought SH3 a couple weeks ago too. :D

Fantastic series of games, one of the few true simulators I thoroughly enjoy. It's getting harder and harder to put off building a new gaming PC.

Yes it did, and considering it's the same developer, I'd find it odd if they removed'em, but then again, with the financial crisis, I guess they might be forced to save cash whatever way they can.

Possibly the best sim series (yes, Flight Sim, being more difficult than actual flying does not count as a good sim). The attention to detail always amazed me. VA kind of sucked for trailer though.

And it's too bad I don't like U-Boats.

I'm really intrigued by the fact that this is going to be the worlds first "first-person submarine simulator", since you actually directly SIMULATE the Captain in SH5, you can walk around, talk to everyone of your subordinates etc.

Silent Hill 5s focus on personal interaction also stands to make it more accessible to newcomers since it will apparently let you delegate tasks to the AI in a much more realistic manner than the previous games, i.e. you can have the mapper automatically plot a course for you, including intercept courses etc.

Some of the hardcore Silent Hunter fans are bitching about this but I say, if it will result in a new influx of people who support the series and helps fund the development of future Silent Hunter games, why not?

Yup, totally agreed. Plus I like the idea of really being the captain this time around. I do hope though that the campaign will stay really dynamic. Too much scripting would ruin the game for me.

I agree from the other side of the fence. Ive read all about the Silent Hunter series, and while its always looked really interesting I never actually went out and played it.

Maybe now I'll give it a shot.

Read title as Silent Hill 5, then
"• VIEW AS A CAPTAIN: Walk through highly detailed submarines in the new first-person view and access every part of your U-boat."
Confused the hell out of me :P

Well a Silent Hill taking place partly inside a submarine wouldn't be that unreasonable, I mean submarines are very cramped and claustrophobic spaces, especially WW2 ones.

Yeah true. What is the name of that Russian game again where you get stuck on the ice breaker?

Chryostasis I think. Interesting looking game. I was thinking of getting it but I hear the system requirements are high.

Wait, this must be a trick?! They make games like this nowadays? Are you sure it won't be an over the shoulder third person shooter with chest high walls?

I gather you never played a Silent Hunter game?

How the **** could I miss that, thanks for the info, dodo!

Edit: Atmospheric and weather graphics seems to have taken a turn for the worse in 5, 4 used a cloud generation system similar to Far Cry 2, SH5's doesn't seem to look as good IMO.

Oh well, who cares, it's not a flight sim after all!

Some screenshots from a dude on the SubSim forums who got the game early:

The last screeny is from a co-op multiplayer session. Man, that looks so good. Wolfpack tactics ftw.

EDIT Found a video with some proper gameplay:

Yeah, I'm psyched, hope the game's as modfriendly as 3 and 4 are.

Got the game. Lots of screenies:

And it even runs well enough to capture some moving images :)

I enjoyed myself so far. Ubi has a lot of bugs to fix and some spots to polish, but the core experience is still a solid game. The added first person mode is more an addition for story elements than anything, but it doesn't bother me and it even helps the immersion a bit (as long as the NPCs don't clip through objects or handle non-existing machinery). I guess this game is a bit like ArmAII at release: it needs patches (and mods!) but it has tremendous potential.

To be fair, Silent Hunter 3 and 4 both needed patches badly at release to, so I'm not surprised.

Probably gonna hold off buying it until the first few patches are out.

Got enough games to occupy me as it is anyway, you know what I mean?
