I remember being really excited reading the blurb for the new Red Faction, thinking it would be an open world resistance - in which you plan raids or ambushes - deep down I knew that would never be and it turned out just to be a sandbox game with a very narrow story path.

So, I was thinking is there, mod or stand alone, a game which follows the Resistance movement of a conflict? I imagine a squad based RTS/RPG, in which you plan raids or ambush locations, all the while needing to scrounge weapons and food, surviving only day to day.

The IO Interactive game, Freedom Fighters, also pulls some of the more visual and story elements but doesn't hit the mark.

Any suggestions?

Mount and Blade Series is the closest you will come to that I think. Highly recommended regardless.

There is also a new game which is similar about post apocalyptic samurais called Kenshi. It's in it's alpha stage, I downloaded the demo and really had a hard time forcing myself to deal with all the glitches and poor UI.

I love Mount and Blade, I've just started another run of Warband (lost the old one when a HDD died) and loving it again.

I might have a look at Kenshi when it at least reaches Beta.

You can try out Full Spectrum Warrior. It's not what exactly you're looking for, but it's close.

Didn't play it, but perhaps Freedom Fighters?

Other than that I'd suggest Jagged Alliance 2 (turn based squad level strategy/tactics) or its spiritual sucessors Brigade E5/7.62 High Calibre.

No it isn't.

I say wait for Jagged Alliance Reloaded.

JA2 and Brigade E5/7.62 are kind of buggy, and you really have to enjoy the gameplay style to ignore the flaws.

Playing as the Rebels in Empire at War is kinda cool. They managed to balance the fact that the Empire is actually a rape machine of massive starships and huge walkers raping everything in sight, rather than soldiers who can get bested by small furry creatures.

You mean Jagged Alliance: Back in Action.

I really don't understand why the German devs thought it was a good idea to make it real-time pausable. I really wish we'd gotten the Jagged Alliance 3 that ran on the S2 engine.

I also really doubt that JA:BiA won't be buggy as shit, the German devs doing it, CorePlay, do not exactly seem experienced with making more complex PC games.

P.S. Sorry for OT, I can't really think of any game that is exactly like what you are looking for.

It would have been nice to have gotten a Republic: The Revolution game (Where you try to topple a former Soviet dictator and can choose to use violence, politics or economics to do it) with a part where you got to very directly plan a coup attempt though.

Have you played Brigade E5 or 7.62? I think you haven't, because if you did you would see the brilliance of this system. I honestly prefer it over the turn based system in the JA series. It's all the advantages of real time but with as much time as you need to think, plan, and order. With a turn based system you have a lot of unrealistic aspects that come with it, but those are totally absent with RTP.

Well, fingers crossed.

Actually, I have played both Brigade E5 and 7.62mm, hung around the Strategy First forums for the first back when it came out and the 1C forums for the latter. I was a big Apeiron fan and was really sad when they went bankrupt but I'd still prefer my Jagged Alliance dose in a turn-based formula.

Mind you, I've gotta be honest, I never actually beat the story in Brigade E5 or 7.62mm, but I've still poured probably a hundred hours in both, at the very least.

Besides, the Jagged Alliance series were never about realism, they were about personality and charm, the banter between the mercs and such, for me anyway.

I didn't mean realism in that sense... I'm just talking about the inherent flaws of a turn based system. For the most part, an "i go, you go" system works in a firefight, but not always. I don't see what problem you have with real time pause; I can't see any disadvantage.

Meh, I'm probably just reluctant to change in general.

I'll probably still get it and enjoy it if it ends up a good game when it comes out.

And I guess either way I'll still have Jagged Alliance: Online which will be turn-based.
