Skins

If I d/l and install CS skins from csnation, how am I sure they will work on CS:S maps?? How am I sure they will work on CS:S itself?

I think my friend just had to do a complete reinstall because he couldnt get into any servers because of some previous files he had. But, I am not sure if these files were skins or not.
