Skybox adding..

This is probably an easy question for u guys but how do u add a skybox?!?!
I've checkd all over this site and the hammer program for answer but had no luck.please dont laugh at this question lol :eek:

and please... make the steps "easy" me am noobie ok?
 
oh and while u guys are helping me, i tried making a ladder against a wall but the texture wont show up, its invisible for some reason .:please and thank you:.
 
First step: Create a box in free space with the sky texture.
The size depends on how big you want the skybox to apear.

2nd: hollow the box (2, smallest)

3rd: add the sky_cam entitie in the center floor of your skybox

4th: add stuff to it, Everything will be 1/16 the size.
 
I'm not sure he's talking about 3D Skyboxes.

Use the toolskybox texture on the brushes you want to be seen as sky.
 
yeah that confused me back then too. there is a difference between adding a sky and adding a skybox. if you just want a 'sky' in your map, do what ti1337 says. that is the easy way to do it. if you want to make a 'skybox', which is optional (but can make your map look a lot better depending on the circumstances), then do what agent says. be warned that making a skybox is kind of tricky, so you might want to hold off on attempting that until you become more familiar with editing.
 
wait so do i download a sky texture thingie as a .wad then load it to the libarary? I downloaded one but it is a bitmap.
 
no need to download one unless you do want a custom one. just create a brush and slap on a texture called 'skybox' onto it. it looks blue with white squares....and says skybox on it when you are in the hammer editor. dont worry it wont look like that in game. if you want to change the sky you want to display in game....go to map and map properties in hammer. go to where it says skybox texture name on the little dialog box that pops up and change it to the name of the skybox you want to use. dont know what their names are? go to http://www.hl2world . com/wiki/index.php/Sky_List that link will show you all the hl2 sky textures and their corresponding names. now when you click the link it will say page cannot be displayed. get rid of the spaces in the link to make it work. when you are done choosing the sky youd like to use run your map and test it out to see how it looks. if you do want to use a custom sky texture....dont ask me....i have no idea.
 
Source's games do not use wads!

And War_Nuker, the skybox is a skybox, i mean applying the skybox texture on the surfaces that surround your map is the skybox. There are also 3dskyboxes that are small boxes outside of your map that you described in your first post.
 
ah my bad....so i meant there is a difference between adding a skybox brush and adding a 3dskybox. thats what i meant right?
 
Yep, that's correct :) Let's not confuse him with the 3D Skybox yet, since there is already a confusion with the ol Wad format that was used with the HL engine and CS 1.6 and the new vtf/vmt textures.
 
1. Make a box
2. make the texture: toolsskybox
3. In map properties there should be something that is called skybox map, change that to sky_dust or something.
4. Add in a Light_enviroment

And voila, you have a sky box


For a 3d sky box

1. Create an outbox (a little box outside the map), with everything toolsskybox texture
2. Add in a sky_camera into the middle of the outbox
3. Add in what you want in the 3d skybox
4. Add in a light

And voila, u have a 3d skybox :)
