At various points during the game my computer will freeze up, the hard drive goes mental for about a minute then all is good again. Also my load times stink. Could this be fixed with more RAM, ive only got 256.

Yes, it could. You might want to add another 256 megs to speed it up. What speed is your CPU?

You want at least 512 MB for half life. The extra ram should help stuttering, loading saving and maybe even allow you to use higher texture detail.

You could try disabling the autosaves as well. A lot of what your experiencing could be to do with these. Load times are quite long for everyone most of the time I think. More RAM would certainly help as well.

Check out this very good HL2 tweak. Here you can find instructions on disabling the autosave (Last page. Just remember to use the manual save hot-key (Default is F6) quite often .......... Or don't bother for more of a challenge! Hitting the save key everyfew steps takes some of the suspense away I think.
