Slow game - Good Enough Computer

The game runs very choppy and slow when I play it. Even with the graphics on their lowest settings it's kinda bad.

I'm on a eMachines 2.83 GHz
1 gig ram
Radeon 9700 video card
All the latest drivers
Foxconn motherboard (haven't updated driver, but haven't found any new ones)
Latest DirectX....

I have just set up the computer this month, and have mostly just been installing utility programs for video, etc.

I know this isn't much information, but is there a better way to clarify what the problem might be?

Looks like your computer is alright, alhough the 9700 has aged a bit now.
But utility programs for video? You should restart your computer if you want to play HL2, because video editing tools EAT away (virtual) RAM and HD-space.
Also, defragment your hard drive a few times (Red bars (fragmenten data) should be almost non-existant). It'll do wonders.

It appears I have the Display Adapters 8.162.0.0. I'm not too educated on what drivers I would need.

Visit www.ati.com and get the latest drivers there, but make sure you uninstall your old ones before installing the new ones.

ok, how do I make sure I've uninstalled all of the old ones? Is there a concise list of them somewhere?

go to device manager and select ur video card and go to properties and uninstall the driver, then install the new one.....


u can tell u did it right because the screen will look off center kinda and you wont be able to get a high resolution......

Just remeber to restart after uninstalling the old drivers and then its ok to install the new ones.

Is the CPU a Pentium4, Celeron or Athlon XP?
