Well... when you switch to high settings instead of low your computer has to work harder. And if your graphic card or memory isn't up to the task it will get choppy. It's kind of a no-brainer really... Anyway, what processor do you have?

the lower the quality, the faster the game. More FPS = GOOD

Widely believed to be a minimum for pretty hardcore gaming nowadays is 1GB RAM and something like a Radeon 9600 Pro at the lower end of the scale if you like ATi (who own nVidia if you ask me :p, although technically nVidia are slightly better than ATi) or a normal nVidia 6600 as mid-low range. Although it would help to know you budget and as AJ Rimmer said your processor speed. Also, it would help to know what games you're having trouble running at max, since certain ones are bound to cause certain amounts of lag on even the best systems, such as Far Cry or Doom 3.

That'll happen if you put a resolution above what your monitor can support.

Also, if you change resolution in Half-life 2 without restarting the game, the healt, Suit and ammo meters can get screwed up.

sgtjake, your processor speed is also very important factor when it comes to performance of games.

You say you can play smoothly on low detail settings, but when you set anything to high, the games start to stutter. Your graphic card isn't bad (though it's no longer mid-end anymore) and it should handle today's games quite good (Half-Life 2 will default to DirectX8.1 instead of 9.0, though). So I guess it's the processor limiting you.

Also, you should have more RAM to make HL2 run smooth on high details, when I had 512MBs the game stuttered a lot when it had to load a new area of a map (lots of hard drive activity caused by the swapfile).

But I don't know a lot about nVidia cards - tell us your processor speed and it will get a bit clearer to us what is really limiting you.

edit - some odd computer configurations (especially the super/hipermarket ones) with Pentium 4 processor have SDRAM memory installed. It's very wrong ;) Pentium processors love speed and when you have slow memory, the processor will have to wait for it to finish reading/writing. It can slow down the computer a lot and a Pentium 4 processor can get a lot slower than a config with Pentium III :P

I would expect HL2 to work at medium settings.

But either way, if you're looking for upgrade tips it would be handy to know your budget?

i have about 10£.....(uk money for all u americans)....just count 1£ at 2$ so 20$

Euros aren't strictly "uk monnies"

And a dollar isn't +100% of a Euro.

And 10 euros can get you a better mouse, at best.
