small problem with config.cfg

ok i am trying to tweak the game a small bit, and the guide says to open up autoexec.cfg (which i don't have, and don't know why) and says alternatively to open up config.cfg.

well after adding the lines into the .cfg file, i save and try to run the game...

here is the problem... the game rewrites the config.cfg without the lines i added... it just takes them out... and when i make the file read-only, it just says it can't load it, writing config.cfg or something close to that affect.

if anyone can help me so that the lines i add, stay in, that would be great.
