smd export tribulations, enquire within

Hi, new here.

I've been battling back the tide of XSI difficulties for a while and am having a problem with the smd export. At first, XSI would crash in the middle of exporting. Now, it seems to export okay but then I open up the exported smd in notepad and:

...*gasp* The file is nearly empty. That couldn't possibly be right... could it? Further, GUIStudioMDL compiles it without incident, but when trying to open the mdl in Model Viewer it says "Error loading model."

I just found someone else with the same problem. Unfortunately, no one has answered them, either.
