Smoothing groups in XSI

Hey, I've been wondering... I come from 3ds max, and eveyone knows about smoothing groups, well what I have been doing in XSI to get the same effect, is setting edges as hard or soft, to get smooth transitions and hard transitions. Is that the correct way to do it? will hl2 recognise that?

It looks exactly like it should, but I don't know if it is the good way to do this. Any help appreciated.

that is the correct, and i think, the only way to do it. In xsi, setting edge as soft or hard, will also crease when subdivied, if u didnt know.
