So yeah...I dropped my external hard drive from about 3 feet onto the driveway. It still boots up, sounds fine, and the computer recognizes it but insists that it needs to be formatted to be used. Is there any way I can save the 700 gigs of shit on it? Had tons of high def movies that I'd hate to lose. (it's a 1.5TB Samsung Story)

I've heard you can put that shit in the freezer for a while, then try and get your stuff off before it heats up. Then do it again until you get everything off. I'm sure you've heard about this technique. If not, look into it.

Can you access the files at all on it? Try downloading Windows Undelete. I use it to recover shit when hdds go apeshit.

no it sounds like the computer can't recognize the file system anymore therefore your computer wants to format it.

try scanning it with HDD Regenerator on the Hirens utility disc, then try running a checkdisk on it. maybe the checkdisk will fix the file system errors, if none of that works use some kind of data recovery software. GetDataBack or something

Getting the data back will be harder than it's probably worth. I'd just start fresh.
