I know there was a thread a while ago, but it came out Tuesday and the thread seemed to have died. Anyway, first impression is that its pretty. Graphics look really nice. I played the originals back on PS2 and had fun until Double Agent, which was trash imo. Anyway, Conviction doesn't bring back the old stealthy aspect but instead provides just an alternative to having an all out gunfight (which seems to be the way to go).

The execution/interrogation stuff is pretty fun for a bit.
The first two interrogations were intense but the next few were week and pointless

Story seems good, but not having played SP in years I don't really get whats going on.

In all SP:C seems like an updated version of Hitman.

Side note - I hear Hitman Blood Money is on 360, but no store around me has it. Much disappointment. Its quite a bit better then this despite its age.

After seeing the "perfect stealth" completion of the demo level, I now refer to this game as Splinter Cell: Slip n' Slide. It doesn't have the stealth gameplay of the originals, so I don't like it. :(

lol you can't carry corpses

If you play multiplayer, let us know how it is. Its pretty much the only reason I would get this game.

From what I understand, only the first mission/prologue has co-op. Otherwise its like 4 player deathmatch garbage. Either way, I may screw around with it a bit.

There are two separate campaigns, a single player and co-op. Each one of them is roughly 5-7 hours in length with the single player one being a bit longer.

The other multiplayer modes are also cooperative with the exception of face-off. In face-off you go head to head against another agent while trying to rack up points. You can do this by killing the other playing and taking down the AI throughout the map. The other modes are just you working together to take out AI or defending a point from waves of enemies.

Overall the game is pretty fun. It's a good game but a pretty bad Splinter Cell game.

I don't know whether to get it, at first the new gameplay mechanics looked pretty cool until it me that this is a splinter cell game and it shouldn't be this way. And also after seeing someone basically float through the demo on the hardest difficulty with relative ease then it was a massive blow for me. I'll see what the reviews say.

IGN seemed to like it, 9.3. Said its the most replayable splinter cell game to date and the gameplay sections they picked out for their video review did look really cool. I have a bunch of games to trade in next week so will probably grab it from the credit I get from them. This definately worth a try.

IGN got the right to an exclusive review while everyone else was embargo'd so take that score with a pinch of salt. EG gave it a 7 which seems more like it. From what I hear coop and MP is where the fun is at. I'm getting the 360 version for free next week so if anyone wants to play the coop campaign, post in this thread.

5-6 hours of Singleplayer.

Haha.

Will be saving my money instead thanks.

Yes I am, and so long as I can use the damned silenced MP5, I don't care who I am in game.

Also, W@W was better then COD4 and MW2

They turned the great splinter cell series into modern warfare with lean

Beat it last night. Enjoyed it, even though it made the emphasis less on stealth. Also, sequel.

Not even close to a reasonable comparison.

Though it is marketed towards the same market.

Conviction, the story of a schizophrenic homeless ex-spy/whaler named Splinter Cell with an alter ego named Sam Fisher on a search for his alleged daughter who may or may not be dead as he chokes everyone in a drunken middle aged fury from the streets of Italy to the frozen waters of Iraq. Directed by Stanley Kubrick with writer John Carpenter. Starring Owen Wilson as Sam Fisher and Ben Stiller as Sam's daughter. I give it 5 dead daughters out of 7.

And so, the death of a formerly great series has been solidified.

**** it, I'm getting it on PC. Hate me.

It's a fun game. Haven't met anyone that didn't think it was great. Just drop your expectations of it being a typical splinter cell game and it's pretty damn good.

It wasn't great. There you go.

Only reason I'm remotely interested in this is for the coop. Chaos Theory remains a favorite of mine, and I'm sure no Splinter Cell will come close to its greatness.

OH LOOK AN OUTLET. HERE HAVE SOME WORDS.

I hired it for a night and beat the campaign. I thought it was horrible for so so many reasons, most of which I won't bore you with here, but... wow. I'm actually surprised at how much of a dump this game is considering the time that went into it. At times it feels pretty solid. There are some excellent setpieces that showcase the graphics nicely (mostly early on, surprise), and when the gameplay works it tends to work well. But there are so many times where it just falls apart, and the whole thing feels kind of shoddy to me. This honestly does not feel like the product of many years' development from a renowned studio (take that with a grain of salt if you must, but they've done better), at best it feels like a decent continuation of the series from a newbie dev who was just lumped with the IP and told to go to town. Also... it's a ****ing corridor shooter. I cannot get around this point. They turned it into a corridor shooter with some stealth mixed in. It's like, here is a room, there are some guys in it, they are probably looking for you (which they are MORE THAN EAGER TO REMIND YOU OF). You could kill them in a bunch of neat, interesting and possibly even challenging ways but here are some arrows that make them dead instead. Please clear this room in any fashion you deem fit (MARKMARKMARKMARKMARKMARK) and proceed to the next room, where equally dim and noisy guards await your never-fail shoot-through-walls magic spy precision. And please don't give me 'well you could just ignore the feature,' because a) **** off it is not my job to balance their shitty game, and b) like I was gonna clear the game that way in one night anyway. That, and the mark thing doesn't even work all the time either - staying in relative line of sight with four baddies at once generally means I have to run directly between them - wow, that's some spy shit right there. In any case, I've seen so many comments that this is a "natural evolution" of the series, but it doesn't feel natural to me at all, and I'm not even that big a fan of the previous games (although I liked Chaos Theory, who didn't). It's just... wonky. Cobbled together. A patchwork of strange mechanics which, on occasion, will overlap to make something approaching a whole.

And that's basically it: more than anything, I just never felt it 'click' that much. There were a few instances where it was actually fun to play, where the stars aligned and made it somehow control right and not be frustratingly easy or difficult (and not difficult challenging - difficult "oh my ****ing christ why is Sam standing there for 3 seconds getting shot in the face I told him to grab that guy I'm going to eat this game and shit it into hell's toilet" or some variant thereof). These were nearly always instances where melee kills weren't prohibitively difficult, or where the level design actually allowed me some level of maneuverability to use stealth creatively, but again most of the time it's just bland corridors and rooms where the sole design purpose seems to be to provide an arena for combat rather than a fun environment for sneaking.

Also, the plot. The whole thing. It's awful. If I have to explain why, then... welp, what's the point even.

So yeah I guess I should have tried that coop thing OH WELL YAHTZEE APPROACH LOL.

Disclaimer: Contrary to the tone of this post I am not a complete manbaby. The game did make me physically angry at several points, but thanks to the support of family and friends I have been able to pull through successfully and make a full recovery. Thankyou for your concern. One love.

Played it.

It was fun.

It was fun the moment I shed off that thing limiting my view of the game, the 'Splinter Cell' title.

I pretended this game was called Conviction. I pretended this wasn't a Splinter Cell title.

I also ignored the fact that after finding Sarah they almost completely forget about her. Except Reed, but that is just a passing mention.

Overall, it was fun. At times it made me feel like some sort of mix of Jack Bauer and the dad from taken. The wonderful soundtrack simply helped that.

It wasn't as terrible as everyone says, the controls felt fine, and I was playing on PC for ****'s sakes. As far as I could tell every single scenario could be dealt with through stealth(except perhaps the defend robertson's console bit), and if you don't then you're just being lazy. A couple parts with Echelon spec ops I even had no alerts.

Haha loved that. Especially the comic strip on the random shit the guards came out with. That was annoying, just sitting behind cover shouting 'omfg SHUT UP!'

Yeah, I got over the "not a typical Splinter Cell game" thing before I started to play it. TBH the new playstyle perfectly suits the kind of man Fisher has become in terms of the story, which was my only reason for wanting to play this as I have always found Sam Fisher a good character and Michael Ironside plays him better than ever in Conviction.
My first playthrough I completely forgot about mark and execute after the tutorial and played the remainder of the game as I had played all the previous entries though everything seems a bit more brutal now. Like I said, the brutality suits the character in terms of story.
As good as Chaos Theory? No. Perhaps if the game had been longer and made more use of the new Interrogations with the regular grunts instead of just with pre-defined scenes then maybe, but I'll always enjoy Sam's dark humour he had when holding a human shield which is missing from this game. Not to mention it has the most pointless level in the history of gaming, one which could have essentially been told in a cutscene and not been made into a linear call of duty MW-esque level.
An enjoyable experience and worth playing if your willing to drop your expectations of what a Splinter Cell game should behave like at the door.

The only Splinter Cell game I've ever played was Pandora Tomorow, and that's because I got it bundled with a video card...

One thing that bothered me was how ineffective Fisher was out of "stealth mode". basicaly if you were detected you were ****ed.

From what I gather this time around it's more action oriented, and going in guns blazing is an option. If that's true I might consider getting it.

Yep, that play style is certainly an option this time around.

From the Rate and Discuss thread:

Just beat it myself, and I'd say I liked it a little better than shift, but I'd still only rate it 6/10.

I didn't find the AI to be too bad. Better than most games really. I think it was just tweaked to be too easy. All their actions seemed to be pretty advanced, its just that to spot something they had to be really close to it, they gave up searching too quickly, and didnt ever look up. It seems like sound was almost a non-issue. There were several times I just ran up to someone, and they didnt turn around until the split second before I melee-killed them. I think the AI was alright, but it was "balanced" for idiots.

And really thats the biggest problem with the whole game. Its balanced for idiots. Not being able to pick up bodies is pretty much blasphemy in the SC series, and complete BS when enemies can spot the bodies and be alerted. Like Stemot said, you can grab them and move them while they're still alive, but that doesnt cut it most of the time. I didn't like not having control over my movement speed. Having sound not matter didn't make it a big deal, but one of the things I really liked about the older SCs was that you had to control your movement speed to move silently, or run loudly depending on the situation.

The Mark/Execute mechanic makes even the hard difficulty feel like easy mode. It simply breaks the game. I ended up not even using it for most of the game, and when I did it was only when the game threw like 6 enemies at you in a narrow corridor with no room to really move.

Also, Triggered alarm = mission failure again? Seriously? This is the biggest thing that pisses me off about the game. They did this in Pandora Tomorrow and got lots of flack for it. People hated it, and for a reason. But the next game (Chaos Theory) rectified this, and they even went so far as to make a joke about it in the game, thats how bad it was. But these designers apparently didn't even play the game, or at least heed the lessons learned by the old developers, and went ahead and put one of those levels in Conviction. God damn stupid decision. Its an even dumber idea than removing the ability to carry bodies, because THEY ALREADY MADE THE SAME MISTAKE BEFORE. AND THEN FIXED IT AND PUBLICLY RECOGNIZED HOW STUPID IT WAS.

Lambert: Sam, be extra careful on this mission.
Fisher: What, 3 alarms and you'll pull the plug?
Lambert: Be serious Fisher, this isn't a video game!

The game is pretty much dumbed down bullshit, and the only redeeming qualities are the story and Sam's voice acting. And the story is only just 'alright.' I liked the Sam/Sarah/Grim bits, but the overall story is typical save the world bullshit, which splinter cell was never really about. At least not so directly. But whoever voices Sam is one of my favorite voice actors in any game. Grim's not bad either, was pretty cool that I recognized her right away when she called up Sam, even without an introduction.

Bump.

I am playing this now after borrowing it from my brother. I usually hate consoles but I'm enjoying this quite a bit. I think the only other splinter cell game I ever played was the first one on the XBOX.

The only thing I can't stand is how the enemies loop their tracks constantly. Gets extremely annoying.

This game any good online?

Co-op is a lot better than the single player, I think.
