So The Game Is On? 1GB GDDR4 HD 2900XT

A 750 Watt or better power supply

...

Soon we are gonna need our own nuclear power plants to power 1 home computer

1GB...when you need to waste more money than the 512MB model.

Where did these guys come from??? That is surly one beast of a card.

Diamond? They had started again making cards around the X800 time frame I think. But it isn't quite the same company it was back in the day. I think they got bought out or something.

Yeah wiki says the Diamond Multimedia brand and assets were bought by Best Data in 2003.

1GB, lol.

This is what I hate about computer hardware. They can't stay in one place for two seconds. Stop, enhance what's already affordable, make it better; don't throw four cores into my face: it's not needed.

QFT. Jesus, I feel like if i told people i still have a p4 2.00 ghz and a radeon 9800 pro i would burst into flames.

It didn't seem like that long ago when the 9800 pro was top of the line ass kicker... now it's outdated.

I wonder how much this will cost.

Oh! Plenty.

These cards were never actually meant for casual gamers like you and I; but for serious computers which do stuff lots of us never even heard of.

There are currently two (1GB) Video cards out there that I know of; which will cost you over a grand, maybe two:

Like these two:

ATI FireGL

FX5500

Don't be making muddy pants because, you and I (Casual gamers) will never encounter the need two have these cards, not the near future, not for the next 10 years. Your 640MB 8800 will do just fine keeping you on top of your games and, if thats not enough; thank god we can pair them up.

Take care.

Diamond's Viper HD 2900XT is a magnificent beast. A 700 million-transistor processing powerhouse, a technology statement and dream come true for enthusiast gamers hungry for the fastest GPU ever made.
Why is this not a gamer's card? Gamers with some extra cash. It's not a FireGL or FireStream card which are for the professional markets.

Well, first; I said "Casual gamers" and second; those cards are way over the top and they will play whatever game we own now like a PAC-Man, including upcoming games like Cysis.
We have to move up on CPU pass dual to like quad-thread before these cards are even demanded. The 8800 are doing super job and no matter what ATI and Nvidia come up with, I'm sure you and I aren't going to need them for long while.
The DX10 apps just came out and so is the DX10 cards to run them, why does anyone think that they need a 1GB of DDR4 Vram, when the 640MB one is drawing 50-60 FPS in ultra?
That's why I'm saying these cards aren't designed for casual gamers like you and I.
I see these cards as the fireGL in civilian cloth.
Don't let this competition give you diabetes.

And not to mention [EDIT - or maybe you did mention] that little to no games will make use of that much Video RAM. I had to edit config files on some games just to make the game use 256MB in the past.

I think it's more for 3D artists, developers and stuff. Some people can get work to pay for it. For example, if you get paid by the hour, and a slower computer makes you sit there and wait for 5 or 10 minutes all the time; those minutes add up to an hour or two a day you are not productive. So they pay for the fast computer, and it pays for itself in prodcutivity and deadlines.

When it comes to developing and 3D modeling, especially with all the fancy lighting and shading effects, on completely unoptimized code, it can run terribly shitty. Have you ever used a console debugger command and no_cliped through a wall? Massive loss of framerate.

I would be surprised if these turn out to be much quicker than the 512mb variant, which has already not been off to a good start. So tbh, it's more likely to just be an even more ill advised purchase over the nvidia variants.

I agree 100% there.

Yeah, it's the same core speed which I think is where the 2900 needs improvement. They just bumped up the memory speed and size.
