Most famous for his work as the creator cult classic Nickelodeon cartoon 'Invader Zim', which was canned as it was deemed 'too disturbing for children'. And before many of you disregard it as being a standard Nick cartoon you must realize that this is from the mind behind some pretty twisted stuff. The cartoon is pure genius, everybody here should give it a watch some time. I'm 19 and I own all 3 dvds =P
Anyway, Jhonen is also responsible for some great comics.
1. Johnny The Homicidal Maniac (My avatar)
This is a comic book that ran 7 volumes due to lack of material, but gave to some amazing things. It's about a guy (Johnny) who tortures and kills people in his basement. At first for fun, but it develops into something so much more as two malevolent voices start talking to him (known as Doughboy and F-Man) convincing him that he is worthless and is only good at killing other people. He also has a benevolent voice in the form of Nailbunny, which was a pet rabbit he had that he nailed the head of to his wall the first day he got it home. The comic is all about his descent into madness and a strange entity that seems to be coming through the wall of his basement... it later moves on to a major plot turn after Johnny has an epiphany yet he still enjoys murdering people in horrific ways. It's a great read and you can pick up the whole Director's cut volume pretty cheap now.
2. Squee!
Squee is a spinoff comic from Johnny, about a traumatised little boy who's parents hate him (his mother is so drugged up she doesn't even know who he is, and his dad wishes he was never born because Squee did nothing but make his life hell) and horrific things consistantly happen to him. He was first featured in episode 1 of Johnny THM as 'Nny's next door neighbour, which was quite a traumatic experience for poor little Squee. One example of the 'horrific' things is a cute little puppy that tries to follow Squee home, Squee tells it to go away because something bad would probably happen. The puppy prances off into the street and gets crushed by a car. Then another car. Then a bicycle.
3. I Feel Sick.
A second spin-off comic about a girl named Devi, who was a girl Johnny fell in love with then tried to kill because he believed that was the only way he would be able to keep her near him forever without hurting her. I have only read the first volume of it but that is about her getting a job as a sci-fi illustrator. She is an artist of sorts but she is upset that in this job she never gets to do any of her own work. Anything she submits she is told to change and edit and change until it looks nothing like what she originally submitted. She has painted a picture of herself as a ragdoll, but never got around to finishing it. This painting is now speaking to her...with two familiar voices...
I highly recommend anybody who is a fan of really crazy, wacky and twisted humour. These comics are also as hilarious as they are twisted, with humour very akin to that of invader Zim, and Jhonen tends to write side notes on pretty much everything, and spends as much time adding crazy humour into his backgrounds as he does to the foreground characters.
Well worth a look. It's easy to find related materials on the web so you guys should check into it some time.
