I'm in the process of wanting to upgrading from my beasty P3 733 to an AMD FX-53 of the socket 939 variety so I don't need to buy registered memory, and i'm researching motherboards at the moment. I googled, and found some reviews and the current crop seem to be relatively close performance wise, which is promising.

Are the differences between MoBo chipsets really that big, and what would be one of the better mid-range boards on the market at the moment? I don't wanna go all out on the motherboard just yet because PCI-E will eventually be coming in, but just want something that'll put it's weight :)

I'm not sure what your question is, but if you have any questions on the FX-53 S939 feel free to ask me.

Hmm...sorry for being a little ambiguous Guinny, but this is my first foray into researching motherboards. I'll try rephrasing :)

I noticed that these new socket 939 motherboards run on different chipsets, and I was wondering if there was a big difference in performance with regards to these chipsets, (eg: is a > b?) and also if one chipsets features make it shine over anothers. Also, is there one particular motherboard on the market in the mid-range price bracket that stands out?

I hope that's a little clearer :) With regards to the fx-53, I'm pretty sure I'm making the right decision, because I want a CPU that'll keep me going for years to come because I'm a lowly student lol, and I know from benchmarks that it packs a fair punch.

You will definatly want to look at this article. It reviews all of the socket 939 motherboards. I personally prefer the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum because its got an nforce 3 chip which seems to be faster in gaming.

Thanks for that link blackeye, it's certainly given me something to ponder  So according to that, the nForce3 chipset is slightly ahead of the K8T-Pro chipset. I'll just have to see what's available in Australia now :( lol
