Ok, how is it possible for anyone to have XSI? I just looked and they only sell them in specific areas and they're like $3,000. Unless someone here is breaking the law or everyone is rich, I just don't see how regular people could get it.

most people have xsi 3, since its actually free. all u do is sign up to the softimage site.

As Pendragon says, most are breaking the law :(

basically unless you own a studio or are very rich, or work at a pro level and have done for many years (in which case you'd be very rich;)), you wont have a legit copy of Softimage XSI or any of the high end pro software. Unless you have an educational licence, but in those cases its easy to spot if their lying or not ;)

Can always get people to prove themselves, post a pic of their box, no pic, no box, no legit software

and I know full well photo's of my old box when I originally got mine (and couldn't help showing off to my Lightwave using mates *wicked grin* hey im only human, i had to boast cause XSI is so cool ;)) have since done the rounds on the net, so I'd be very interested to see someone pass mine off as their own lol

and if they can't post a pic, then I can always get friends at Softimage, Newtek, Alias and Discreet, aswell as a number of great friends at plugin developers to run them through their databases, check if their legit. I do that all the time for work as I ain't gonna hire nobody who's using warez. And that covers those people who claim they don't have the box/manuals by getting it via electronic download.

Edit: Ichi - Thats the EXP version, not the full program, somehow I don't see Softimage giving away thousands of dollars worth of software when they can still make plenty of money from it, afterall 3.5 isn't all that much different from 3.0. They'd lose way too much business. Alias have their PLE, Discreet have their 30day demo aswell as gmax, Newtek have their Discovery Edition.

yeah you cna get softimage XSI|EXP....
Well, one modeler on my team has Softimage through educational liscene, andothe has 3dsmax through work, things like that.

The only way to get an educational license is to actually take a class right? Like a 3D modeling class where they actually give you the software so you can use it and practice?

How did you get your's, fenric? License?

I think they gonna buy some Maya licenses to our school. We already got our own school laptop which we can do almost whatever we want to.

Gonna be awesome to get some Game developing classes in school!

some courses/specialist schools will pay for the licence for you, but many is a case of use the software there and have to share with others, or buy an educational licence for yourself to learn more. The cost of the proper courses can go into the thousands and usually end up with a job at some of the bigger studios anyway, so anyone paying that kind of money for a course wont mind the small amount for their own educational licence, end of the day if they've done that then their serious and will very likely end up earning a good pay straight out of the school.

As for mine, I bought a personal copy of XSI advance when we bought licences of XSI and mental ray for the company. It was slightly cheaper since we were buying so many at once (9 seats of XSI for the workstations, 30 of mental ray for the farm) but it still emptied my savings at the time, but to ensure I could continue to use it if anything happened to the company I had to licence that one in my name not the company (and because it was done that way, I couldn't buy it via the company for tax/legal reasons), but I haven't regretted it, its already paid for itself, though I'm finding it harder to get the old savings back to where they were *grumbles* :D
