At least depending on how we end up defining a planet since there is no real definition of one yet. Right now an object larger than pluto has been found orbiting within the solar system further out that pluto.

We may end up with 8 true planets, and several hundred "dwarf planets" that make up the solar system. If this ends up being the case then I won't feel like something is missing next time I listen to Gustav Holst: The planets suite.

I think they're both going to remain considered planets

pluto will remain a planet just because it would be too much trouble to change everything/everyone's opinion on the matter.

didnt they find another planet? i have no idea because i dont really keep up on my astronomy.

Quiffy.

Actually it may have 10 or more (if pluto remains a planet). Out at the kepler belt (or comet belt) people have detected something big out there...as big as mars, based on the things gravity. So if we manage to actually get to see what it is, it could be a planet...but I think everything inside the kepler belt should be classified as a comet.

Kuiper Belt :P You're thinking of Kepler, and his oh so wacky laws.

Pluto will stay a planet. If it didn't then everything would go wrong.

My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine? (Pies/Pluto)

Finally something interesting to talk about in a while lol, I dont think that they should classify the Kuiper Belt Planets in our solar system. The Kuiper Belt Goes extremly far out and those planets may not be detected again as the belt rotates. But for Black Holes....

Pluto will likely stay classed as a planet due to being "grandfathered". Admitted, it's pretty much the same as any other kuiper object and should be removed, but it's been with us so long that they're not going to omit it.

As far as im aware pluto if much further out, considerably smaller and has an eliptical orbit like comets, giving it good reason for it to not be considered a planet, but that debate has gone on for years...i don't think anyone actually cares to change its status as a planet to something else. Doesn't really affect anyone, so i suspected it won't change.

KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHN!

It really depends on your definition of "planet"

Apparently there is an ongoing debate of Astronomer vs. loads of other groups on what should actually classify something as a planet. Each definition proposal has it's pros and cons, the cons mostly being "too abitrary a definition"

What can't they decide on? Isn't a planet a big chunk of something that orbits a sun in a repeating cycle? What else does that? Asteroids don't orbit anything, Haley's Comet has a tail, and Moons orbit planets. Size won't matter because something too small won't have enough mass to be affected by the gravity of the sun.
So if it has a regular orbit around a sun, and doesn't have a tail, it's a planet. Problem solved. I could save these stupid space agencies millions in research and opinion polls and whatever else governments come up with to waste money.

Then the whole Kuiper Belt become planets, and we'll have 26 or so.

the next pandemoniun of the humanity,is pluto a planet?

people1:"OMFG pluto is not a planet?why?me wants to know!"
people2:2what pluto not a planet but wtf?is like what them?what it is?what it is goddamed?!"
people3:arrrg what it is?!what it is whaaaat?!!!!1"
people4:"lets burn the city to get a answer!"
*chaos and destruction happens in all the world, people destroy everything and everyone go crazy*
guy over a van on fire:"wha the big fvck it is?what?!!"
other people:"maybe there no planets!maybe we all must die!!"
other:"maybe I am a planet <maniatic laugh>!!!"
other:"no I am the planet <maniatic laugh>!!"

and them the humanity ends and the last living person who is a cientific says "hey it was a plnet after all"

Everything you say, is legendary.

didnt know that

btw I forgot to add

*a kid climb trough a pile of rest and eveyone look at him whit eyes of hope for a better future and a new leader and listen carefully what he is going to say*
kid:"pluto is the dog of mickye mouse you dumbasses!"

Pluto will stay a planet, simply because what Angry Lawyer said, weve been taught theres nine planets for a while, if we go back to 8 planets it will all screw up everyones brain.

Yup, and Asteroids do in fact orbit the sun too. Ever hear of the Asteroid Belt?

And in the case of Pluto - Charon, is that a dual-planet system (ie two planets orbitting each other) or what?

Also:
Size won't matter because something too small won't have enough mass to be affected by the gravity of the sun.
WTF? That makes no sense.

This is like learning that Short Recoil has 8 testicles, instead of 9.

Size won't matter because something too small won't have enough mass to be affected by the gravity of the sun.

lol, any kind of mass small or large is affected by being within another bodies gravity field.
