Based on the Robert E. Howard 16th-century demon beater-upper. Starring the awesome James Purefoy aka Antony. Also present is Max von bloody Sydow. Should be some fun, fairly mindless action. Hopefully well done rather than Bayified though.

love solomon kane. (btw enjoy this one reply because besides you I'm probably the only person here who even knows who Kane is :) )

although I have zero faith this will be faithful to Howard's character. he's a superstitious puritan christian who's doing god's work. somehow I see studios shying away from any religious aspect to the kane character which would be a shame because that's who he is

wiki said:
The movie tells the origins of Solomon Kane and is hoped to be the first of a trilogy of movies. When the story opens Kane is a mercenary of Queen Elizabeth I fighting in Africa, but after an encounter with a demon, The Reaper, he realizes he must seek redemption or have his soul damned to Hell. He returns to England and lives a life of peace, converting to puritanism, but soon the doings of an evil sorcerer upset his plans and he must take up arms again

sounds generic

this is just retarded:

Kane is a 16th century soldier who learns that his brutal and cruel actions have damned him but is determined to redeem himself by living peaceably. But he finds himself dragged out of retirement for a fight against evil.

kane never felt he needed redemption as his main motivation is ridding the world of evil

I'm not going to judge it just yet, the lead actor is seriously good - definitely worth at least a little optimism. Plus the supporting cast ain't bad.

ya I'm just jaded from the rape that is anything even remotely related to Robert E Howard. I've yet to recover from Kull ...and I havent even seen it

I like von sydow, he hasnt recieved the recognition he deserves. but he's playing a demon in the movie, which is at odd with the Kane character because I cant remeber a single demon or monstrosity in Howard's stories that had anything resembling intelligence

Huh? von Sydow plays Solomon's dad, Josiah Kane.

whoops. I thought he played Reaper (villian). anyways I cant remember any mention of his father in the stories. I mean besides a few african characters and the odd white villianous characters Howard's Kane stories feature few other characters besides Solomon

Yeah, it's definitely no direct adaptation. Still, could be fun.

YA BUT THE JADEDNESS PREVENTS ME FROM BELIEVING THAT!!!

expecting it to be crap is even better when your expectations are not met

I saw the preview footage at Comic-Con. I'm a huge fan of Howard and Kane, and I thought it looked pretty impressive. The director was very clearly a fan, they have an all star cast, and excellent production values. I think it'll be good. It's an original story, but they plan to make a trilogy so 'Kane ruining people's s*** in Africa', which is what he is most remembered for, will be in Film 2.

I hope to God they do a Seventh Seal shoutout or homage with Max Von Sydow. Have a chess set next to him in one of the scenes. It doesn't need to be overt. I agree with what the director said at Comic-Con, that if they'd made this film a few decades earlier, Von Sydow would have been hands down the man to play Kane.

No idea if it'll be good, but GOD DAMN do I love James Purefoy, so I have high hopes. If he kicks 1/10th as much ass at this role as he did as Mark Antony it should be very watchable at least.

definately ..also a young Jack Palance would be great in the role. I want this to be good but hollywood has let me down time after time I dare not hope

That pic reminds me of the Witch Hunter from Warhammer... essentially the same thing...

Yeah, if I may proselytize for my good man Kane, he is pretty much the prototypical Warhammer-style Witch Hunter. The look and the attitude in the games were lifted straight from Howard's short stories.
