wow just found some really amazing 3d work on the net http://www.panzar.com/
not sure who its made by. but its really well made, loads of detail

any one know the process or general technques involved in making super hi detailed models like this ?

Oh my goodness! That is beautiful! I wish I could model like that! Hell, I wish I could model... :dozey:

looks like a few types of modeling. along with dynamics for the wobbling chains, chainmail etc.

It's just nicely detailed objects with no texturing and basic GI setup. Nothing "overly" complex, just very well executed which gives a great result. A lot of the elements are pretty simplistic, great attention to detail which makes all the difference in my book.

i really like the renders.. brings out loads of detail :D

yup good lighting and the guys probalby been doing this for about 5 years with a great education at some top notch school

naa try it. Model something but instead of using textures to fake features like dents or things. Model that into the object too. It's not as hard as it looks, its the attention to detail thats the hard part.. oh and the patience to do it. Patience is something they must have in bucket loads

With the kind of effort I put into modeling combined with my patience I would finish that in about.... never.

That kind of detail reminds me of this stuff

What's the name of the lighting that makes all those models look like matte grey plastic? Is that HDR?

The look can be achieved in a number of ways - but is basically called diffuse illumination or radiosity.

If you look at older CG you will notice everything has hard lighting (see Toy Story). Diffuse illumination is exactly what it sounds like - lighting the scene using the diffuse color of the object. So the surface acts as a light bouncer in the scene (if you like). Think about a photgrapher taking a school photo. Instead of point the light at you, he points the lights at bounce card to relect the light onto the model.

The actual techniques to create this effect are:

1. Use area lights - you can define a light to be defined over an area instead of a point in space - good for soft shadowing - but not the color bleeding

2. Final gathering (Mental Ray) - using a fake global illumination effect which samples incoming rays around a hemisphere of the pixel to get the final color. This also builds in a technique called ambient occulsion.

3. Gobal illumination and radiosity - full algorithms use one of two methods - photon distribution or model subdivision. Mental ray uses the photon technique. Defining emitters and recievers in the scene allow the photons to bounce around the scene picking up the lighting information along the way. These arrive on the final surface (when their energy runs out) and contribute to the final color. This is the most physically accurate technique.

--

HDR is something completely different. It involves storing all the lighting information in a uncompressed format (like .hdr or .map). This lighting information can then be used to drive radiosity algorithms like final gathering.

Typically you can light the whole scene using a single image

Check your 3D software manual - it should explain it all.

I wish I was that good at modelling sooooo badly! Can I steal his brain PLZZZ!

ye but I have put 9mounths of my life into it. You never get anywhere without hard work and to look at his work you know he is a proffesional at what he does and very talanted and dedicated graphics designer.

He has 3Ds Max. I have XSI|EXP(shittay)! Once Unreal 2004 comes out I will use the DVDs to help me.

XSI is not shitty at all LOL. Infact its proberly better than 3dsmax is quiet a lot of ways. Animation is better organisation and work flow are better. Its never really about which program is better and its more along the lines of which program you enjoy using the most.

woah IchI, you live in Leeds?? lol I'm just outside of Leeds, going towards Bradford, kinda in the middle, near Pudsey (the village with the most pubs *hic* *grins*)

But anyway, yeah XSI is a brilliant package. Max though, while I hate it, has come a long way and is now very powerful. I can see though how the EXP version of Softimage is a bit shitty, but, you get what you pay for I guess and the full package is expensive but worth every penny if your serious about 3D.

I might do an XSI roadshow in Leeds or Liverpool soon - I will post once its organised.

hmmm. I will definatly go if its in leeds.

Fenric how old are u? also how much do u know 3d graphics wise?

I might go too.. We don't get many "events" like that up here, we're the forgotton northerners. I think the last one was some Video Toaster demo I went to

26, over 10 years experience in 3D, from 3D Construction kit (anyone remember that? heh) to XSI, Houdini etc. Mostly Lightwave though cause I prefer that package for a lot of work, even now, really like modeling in XSI though

i dont really think i have ever seen ne thing you have done Fenric :( can you post up some of your best works ?

well, you probably dont give a damn but im in whitefield/manchester :)
*cry for attention
hehe

Okay, cool. Pity I don't have a software manual, then.

EDIT: Hey, Fenric, I've still got 3D construction kit...

I am used to 3Ds Max. IMO it is the best program. I used it everyday I had it(30 days). When I got the EXP(that's 10x worse that the resular XSI) I used it once. :dozey:

Fenric is right, it's really not that hard, you just flesh it out, and never worry about polygons. It takes a little bit of practice, but mostly it's patience. I'm by no means an expert, but if I had the time I could probably make something that looks (atleast) nearly as good as that.

fishymumma, search the forum :p

crushenator, IIRC there's often some events like this over there. If your a Lightwave user there's a guy in Manchester who did/does organise meetings, i never went though so i dunno if its any good

Brian, damn you do? lol I miss mine since I got rid of the Amiga, was it available on the PC then? heh was my first experience of scripting/programming. I didn't like that bit about it but atleast it was easier than some scripting languages I've seen since. One of these days I'll get the Amiga emulator working again and mess around with it :E

Which company do you work for?

eeeeeek i had a look through all the models and skin fourms but you aint started no threads :S

softmonkey, i have my own, and im currently freelancing as a concept artist for the Blake's 7 remake

fishy, well they are there. try via my profile?

TBH, I can't remember what it was on. I still have two Amigas, so it might have ben the Amiga version. There was a PC version, though. Ages since I've used it. I think the box is in the back room somewhere.

You'll have to dig it up sometime, I remember you could make really fun games on that. It was pretty impressive considering how basic it was. I remember trying it at one point on an A1200 and it became almost too fast, god knows what it would be like on todays machines lol.. I think there was a version for the Spectrum or C64 too. I remember the old games that were supposedly done with it, Driller being the most well known one, for me atleast. And one where you had to collect Anke's inside a Pyramid. Dead old now but great gameplay, apart from when you got stuck and couldn't see which way you were going because the walls were pretty much the same dithered pattern. I remember Cybercon III. That was a more advanced kind and stupidly fast even with all the detail (for the time).. I'd jump at the chance to play a HL2 mod version of that game. Damn it could be so cool....... *cogs begin turning, idea's begin forming* oh no, crazy mod idea imminent lol

oooh http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?name=Cybercon+III

now I just need something that'll slow down DOS to a crawl :E

Hmmm... a 3D construction kit based on Source?

That would be uber-neat. Physics for the layman!

No, Cybercon III done in the Source engine... Download the PC version above (I'm looking for a decent slow down program to make it actually playable) and you'll see what I mean, once you get really into the game that is, its a bit complex, always was (another reason why it was so cool I reckon) But you'll probably see what I'm thinking, the large area's, the imagination that went into the original... It's begging to be remade, I wonder if I could even get the original designer involved, I bet he'd be interested actually... Anyone else interested? :D

For slow-down, use moslo.

I'll check the game out. Is it freeware?

EDIT: Never mind, found it on the underdogs.

Go and get it, if only for the nostalgia value :).

It looks to be the one I've got.
lmao omg lol. oh wow that brings back memories, I had forgotton all about the second one that came out with all these amazing new features it had. Nice find mate! :D and I'll have a search for this moslo too cheers :)

Edit: damn, moslo doesn't work atall :(
