DSL should be up and working tommorow (it was supposed to be installed Friday, but things were going wrong...), and I'd like a little information on the weapons.

I know that at the beginning of the round, you should buy weapons from the buy menu. Now, you start with that pistol and the combat knife. Say you buy two weapons, will that replace the weapon you're holding, then the other? Can you access the menu in the middle of the stage?

You can also pick up weapons from dead players, right? But will they replace the weapon you're holding, or do you need to press the use key to swith it or something? Because if you got a nighthawk (that's a pistol, right?) and some sniper rifle, had the rifle out, but then as you're running up to a good position you run over some guy's shotgun, it would kind of suck.

Just a few questions I'd like answered, and if there's anything else you think I should know before I begin the terrorist-stabbing goodness, post it. Thanks.

OK. You start off with a knife and a pistol. Glock for T's and USP for CT's. You can't drop the knife, but you can drop the pistol, or buy another to replace it. The pistol is your secondary weapon. You can then buy a shotgun, an smg, a rifle or a machine gun from the buy menu as a primary weapon. You also need to buy ammo for this weapon.

Also, you can buy grenades, one HE grenade, two flashbangs, and one smoke grenade.

You can only access the buy menu from the spawn point, and depending on the server, you may be able to go back to buy ammo, but you hardly ever need to unless you spray everywhere.

I think thats all. Hope it helped.

Are you saying you can only have the knife and another weapon (besides the grenades)?

no hes saying u cant drop the knife and u can only carry a primary weapon a secondary weapon 1 grenade 2 flashbang and 1 smoke grenade

I still may not be getting this. You can have a primary weapon, a secondary weapon, a grenade assortment, and the knife?

yea some of this u might not get when u play the game u will get what we are talking about

Primary (the main weapon, you can carry one of these.) includes:
Shotguns
Sub-machine guns
Rifles
Machine Gun

Secondary weapon (pistols, can carry one) include:
Glock
USP
Deagle
Dualies
Five-Seven
and some other i cant remember the names of

Knife... you can't drop it

Extra's:
1 HE grenade
2 flashbangs
1 smoke grenade
1 defuse kit (CT's only)
1 bomb (T's only, you only get this if you are chosen randomly by the server to have it)

I think thats everything ;)

Alright then, that brings me back to my original question. If you walk over a weapon of that type (primary or secondary), will it switch? And I'm guessing you just buy your primary and secondary, then those are the ones you have. Will the grenades and such be on the number keyes?

if u go up to a weapon press g and it will drop the weapon that you are currently switched to and pick up the weapon that is on the ground u will pick grenades up automatically unless you are holding the max and u can only switch primary with primary and secondary with secondary

well im just going by default since he will probably use default

Well, the so-called DSL was installed today while I was at school. As soon as I got home, I was excited to try out Counter-Strike and Deathmath for the first time; may I ask what the average latency is?

depends on the server but usually around 20-30 but it all depends on the location server

Geez, giant, that was fast.

Well, I'm joining ones that have 32 and it's hell. Is there something I can do?

No chewyxx, I have not :) I only just got my new credit card in the mail today (that's right, that's why I havn't been able to create an account), and I won't have all the parts until mabye four months in future.

Meanwhile, I need to sort out what my internet is doing.

Oh, ok. On my Steam account settings? Let me go look.

no on the filters on the server lists rite under latency
also check the internet in your steam settings and make sure its on dsl

Ok, looks like I'll have to do that tommorow. Both games said they weren't available about an hour ago, and still aren't. Thanks though.

try restarting steam it just did that for me and i restarted and it works now

Yeah, it worked. It's still pretty laggy, but I decided to try playing it a little. i got 15 kills. Did ok. Then my second game, people were telling me to leave because I was too laggy. Heh heh. I'll keep working with it.

do u ever check the latency of the server before u join??

you might be lagging because you are set with the default rates, probably anyway; Steam for some insane reason deafaults DSL customers to cl_updaterate 20, cl_cmdrate 20. These can go an awful lot higher for a good DSL connection.

If you go into your options in CSS. Then click on the keyboard tab, at the bottom is a boxed advanced option- click it then tick the developer console (may aswell tick fast weapon switch while you are at it).
Now the tilde key (depending on your keyboard!) should open the console into which you can enter commands. The tilde key is that squiggly one above the TAB button (on most european boards atleast).

Now enter the following commands-

net_graph 3
cl_cmdrate 70
cl_upadaterate 70
rate 20000

these commands (except the first one, which i'll get to)increase the traffic flow of packets sent to and from the server.
net_graph 3 is an easy way of identifying if you have the correct rates, plus its full of useful info such as fps and your true ping. It displays a small graphic in the bottom right corner, the bit you are interested in, is - choke. If you are getting choke when nothing is happening then you rates need dropping a bit (reduce cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate until you get no choke, you will usually get a bit of choke in a firefight but that is normal (0-9 choke in a burst of action isnt too bad).
The flip side of this is- you may be able to push your rates upto 101 for updaterate and cmdrate if you get no real choke at 70.

You wont really notice the difference unless you are on a super fast server tho- and on larger servers higher rates may give you a bit of choke as there is more info on the go- So mine usually hover around the 70-80 mark since i'm usually in big servers a lot.

leave your rate at 20000 tho, that shouldn't need changing

oh btw if you are getting any loss (next to choke in net_graph display)then you have other problems! Lost packets are usually caused by a poor ISP or possibly a firewall problem- zonealarm and norton firewall used to cause a lot of trouble with css

And I enter that on the console while I'm in the game, right?

Well, I'm going to guess it's a yes. Thanks, I'll go try it next time I play.

I pushed them up to 3200 then quit. Still no real choke, so I might push it a little higher. Thanks.

they are limited to rate 20000 ,update 101 and cmdrate 101 so u can push them as high as you want but they will be capped at their max!

Well, I got them both to 5600 without getting 1 or 2 choke every couple seconds. Still laggy everywhere though.

The idea of a LAN party has always seemed waaay too nerdy, but playing Counter-Strike makes the thought more and more appealing.
