Ok, this is a little different than the usual "help me assemble my computer!!!' topic, but I think this is a better place for it than the general forum..
Here's some interesting background on the DX9 ATI/NV thing:
http://arstechnica.infopop.net/Open...74096756&m=8680985585&r=9290907585#9290907585
Basically the post explains that DX specs in the past were written by IHVs themselves, and 'approved' by MS. For DX9/PS2.0 MS tried to make a more consistent standard, but ATI and NV both went their own ways instead. Essentially neither of them followed the original DX9 spec MS produced, but the DX9 spec that ATI chose to implement happened to be a lot better than the DX9 changes NV decided to invent.
So instead of "NVIDIA sucks at DX9 because they didn't follow microsoft's spec", the real story is "NVIDIA's independently developed version of DX9 sucks compared to ATI's version".
I hope microsoft is able to reign both these wild horses in for PS3.0 next year. I didn't realise how much control individual IHVs exert over the DX specs. It's detrimental to the whole industry to have this kind of inconsistency.
