I've had Half life 2 for a number of years now and with each passing hardware upgrade I've seen the performance of my computers handling of half life 2 and the source engine increase with each hardware installment ect...

However now, I seem to be having a hard time running half life 2, not the source engine because CSS and DODS ( along with mods ) run just fine. Half life 2 its self seems to not understand the full capabilities of my computer. CSS, DODS, and HL2: E1 can all run AA 8x + all settings high, however Half life 2 does not give me the option to run it in 8x AA where before a major graphics card update neither did CSS so i know i can do it and that it doesnt give the option unless your card can support it.

Even though I have Half life 2 set to AA 6x it looks like 2x or "none", no to mention the choppy frame rates and the constant stalls i get along the way. I know for a fact that my computers hardware is not an issue, I can run Rainbow Six: Vegas on highest settings and get frame rates of about 35-60 depending on the map and for those of you who dont know that is a "next gen" running in the Unreal 3 engine that does not support duel core processors.

If any one has any ideas short of a complete reinstall I would love the help. Oh and I have already tried "verifying the cache files" and deleting the "clientregistry.blob" to auto update steam. Thanks for the help in advance :D

I believe you can type mat_antialias # in console for higher antialiasing, but if not then try just forcing higher in your gfx card driver settings.

thats not the problem. its not a hardware issue, its a half life 2 problem.

what is your graphics card? only ati cards can do 6xAA.
also hl2 never really updated the settings for hardware.
either turn it off in game and turn it on in the control panel or just stay with the in game settings.

I have an ATI HD 2900XT. This will run source AA 8x ( along with all other games of corse ). However half life 2 doesnt seem to want to do it. Either way it dosnt matter what it says becuase even set at AA 6x it looks like 2x, and im getting all kinds of lag IE: choppy game play which should not be happening at all on my system ( I'll give you specs just so you know )

intel core2duo e6300 1.86Ghz
ATI HD 2900XT
2gigs of ram
Windows XP pro w/ SP2

I think thats about all you really need to know performance wise, its a quality mother board ( not sure the model number but its a Gigabyte ). I also have good cooling. I know its not a Hardware issue, Im thinking I might just reinstalling it. I tried "deleting local content" but that didnt do anything after click "install" and re-downloading all the files for it.

ok Im starting to get pissed! ( not at the forums or any one one it ) but This problem with Half life 2 is really starting to piss me off!!

I completely deleted my steam folder!!! everything!!! new fresh reinstall!!!
ran half life 2... it saved my screen resolution settings and keyboard control settup and everything!! wtf!! how and why would it do this if i had completely uninstall steam and delete the steam folder and what ever is left in it!?

umm you could have just deleted the cfg folders and it would fix it....also its possiblle is saved in the registry.

I tried deleting all the cfg, it didnt help a bit. Im assuming its saved else where in the registry ( like one had mentioned before me ) however I would not know where to look for this ( obviously in regedit, but where i do not know ). Is there any way to get half life 2 to manually scan your hardware and/or reset all the graphics setting automatically out side of half life 2 its self? I do not think it picked up my hardware the same way my other source games did because the rest of them run just fine where half life 2 suffers.
