Sound card affect performance?

Seems like a noob question, but I wanted to know if it was worth upgrading the onboard ac97 sound on my asus p4c800, would something like an audigy 2 do more offloading from the cpu and give better FPS? My guess would be no, but it doesn't hurt to ask..
(ac97 is already good enough quality wise for me, so that's no concern)

AC97? Urk... That's bad. Definetly buy an Audigy 2
Concerning FPS... Depends on the game. And the AC97. I dont know how complex it is, many onboard sounds have very little CPU usage. I know the Nforce2 sound does.
