Sound error - loss of sound

When in HL2: DM I have a strange bug. After a random amount of time, all types of sounds/sound effects cease to function, and I get a complete loss of sound. Even after I quit the game, I still have no sound effects what-so-ever, so I need to restart my computer to get sound working again.

I've had this problem a while, and even had this with CS: Source. However, I fixed the sound in CS: Source by changing the speaker settings from 5.1 surround to 2 speakers in the options. I did this with HL2M, but it didn't work.

My system specs are:
- Asrock K7S8XE+ motherboard (onboard 5.1 sound)
- AMD Althon XP 3200+
- 512mb DDR PC2700 RAM
- Labtec Arena 675 speakers

Recentley I was told to type "snd_restart" in the console to fix this, so I did. However, I get a load of errors which say, 'Failed to load sound "[sound file path+wad]", file probably missing from disc/repository"

WTF is that supposed to mean, and what can I do? Please help me someone, this is really anoying me...

Does snd_restart fix the sound for you?

The console having lots of errors is something that happens normally, I think. I certainly see them and have no obvious sound faults that I think come from this. Valve just seem to have left some loose ends.

the snd_restart doesn't bring back the sound for me. Ty for the help though, I'll try e-mailing this problem to valve as well...
