I posted this first on the official Steam help forum, but it seems to have been swept away in the plethora of rants and suggestions about the shield in Counter-Strike. Hopefully someone here will be able to help.

Anyway - I've had few problems with Steam up until I began playing Half Life single player again today, for old time's sake. However, whilst the game generally runs smoothly, I keep getting the error

"SV_Startsound: volume = 318"

and the game then crashes to desktop. I'm not sure if this is something to do with my computer, or a new bug in the latest version. It doesn't happen at any specific moment; so far it's crashed when I've picked up an HEV battery charge, or when a headcrab is attacking, a grenade exploding and even when I fell into a pit.

I was hoping that if anyone here has been suffering from the same problem, they might have had more luck in overcoming it than I have. Thanks for any help.

I unfortunately am in the same boat and made an almost identical post on the steam forum which just like you was mainly ignored.I get pretty much the same error but I have had less luck than you.The game crashed when I try to pick up the suit for first time. This is steam related and our only hope is a new version of steam.Sorry I cant help ,we are both screwed for now.

Have you tried adjusting the volume in the options area?

I have tried fiddling with all available sound options and I still crash at same spot....

Is your HL install:

Upgraded from a previous retail install via the any of the Steam installers.
Downloaded from Steam via the basic 500Kb steam installer.
Installed from the new 200mb(ish) HL+CS cached Steam installer.
Installed from the new 723Mb complete Cached Steam installer.

Upgraded from a previous install via the current steam installer.

I also have retail version upgraded by Steam.

I've tried changing the audio options, but it still crashes even when the volume muted.
