Sound= slooooww then fast

When I first load up my computer and I want to play a song, it takes about 5 minutes for it to start playing, if I close media player when Im waiting, I have to restart the computer If I want to try again. The same thing happens when I try and open the advanced area of audio properties, im using windows 98, it's my older computer I mainly use for work and a few lesser games.

The question is, can this be fixed? I recently run a memory test on it and I run disk fragmenter, my ram Is approx around 255mb I think...

Once I manage to play the song once it's all fine after that...
This happens with a few games as well, Arcanum for example.

Yeah well I don't see whats so great about winamp to be honest and anyway the problem is with using winamp is that all my audio information would have to be typed in manually again ;(. I really can't be bothered with that, all I want is a player that can play music, perhaps stick it into a playlist and the ability to give the songs autorankings meaning I only play the songs that I really enjoy etc... I find the feature useful from WMP.
