My mobo came with an onboard soundcard, I have recently learned that this could slow down your CPU to a noticeable extent (especially when playing video games I presume). Now, would it be worth the money to buy a PCI slot soundcard? Would the onboard card stop using cycles if I disabled it in the hardware management? I would appreciate any information somebody could provide.

Buy a PCI soundcard and disable the onboard sound in the BIOS. You are right about the CPU load, I've talked with a guy from Ubisoft and he said in games (like Raven Shield) when there are alot of sounds onboard soundcard can be very slow and reduce the performances of the game. Also, the quality of the sound is alot better with PCI soundards because you get alot less interferences from the motherboard.

Yep I second that, with my onboard sound i was getting slight interference, but with my audigy 2 ZS, its totally fine, no interference at all
