Source games prior to Orange Box don't work

When I try to launch any Source game prior to TOB, I get this:

Failed to load the Launcher DLL:

The specified procedure could not be found.

Before you start jumping in with "lol verify cache rofl omg", I've reinstalled Steam and it STILL doesn't work.

Do you have the same problem if you put Steam into offline mode?

Yes.

This was all working until recently, when it just stopped working for no reason. I didn't install anything that could have broken it.

I know garry's mod is broken for everyone. This may be the case for other steam games.

Garry's Mod wasn't broken until I reinstalled Steam, in an attempt to fix this. So reinstalling Steam has ruined my life. It's over for me.

I had this as well but it worked after i verified it. Maybe try it again. If you already have try contacting valve telling them exactly what you told us. Sorry i cant be of more help.

Garry's mod is now working. Restart your steam client to get the update.

Garry's Mod wasn't broken until I reinstalled Steam, in an attempt to fix this. So reinstalling Steam has ruined my life. It's over for me.

Guess you better kill yourself then.

Reinstall your games and Steam. If it doesn't work, go ask Steam Support.

I asked Steam Support, making it clear that I had reinstalled Steam and therefore all my games, and that this was far superior to verifying GCFs in terms of troubleshooting.

Guess what I got? A link to a guide that tells you how to verify GCFs! I asked again, making it even more clear. Let's see what happens!
