Source Map Sizes

I was looking at the instructions for making a 3D skybox and I saw that the maximum playable map size is 32768 units on each side. What does this mean and how big is it? I can't download the SDK because I haven't preordered HL2 but I might be interested in modding. I would like to make a big map that is like the scale of a BF1942 map without sacrificing much detail.
 
Haha, you can _easily_ make a BF1942 sized map, since you can adjust the scale of things you can make up to a 32km squared map I believe which is enormous!

So if you scale everything down to change the map size from .8km to 32km per x,y,z axis, what does that mean for map details? Does this mean that the ground textures will be really low or that you can't have as much terrain detail or what? According to the binks, it looks like the coast map in HL2 is bigger than .8km in width.
 
It means nothing for detail (unless there is so much stuff that you have to remove some detail to keep the framerate up).
