I tried to play HL2 on my computer and it ran terribly. I think I need a new video card, but I'm not completely sure if that will run HL2 or any source games smooth. heres some system info:

Speed: 2676 Mhz

RAM: 990 Mb

Driver: VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP with 32 mb.

Would a new video card get rid of the problems with Source? Cause I got this computer brand new in Oct of 2006. And what kind of Video card should I look for?

not bad of a pc besides the video card. do you know your computers model exactly? it could help in figuring which graphics slot you have.

(1) Ultra Branding
(1) Windows XP Home Edition w/ Phoenix Recovery
(1) Intel Pentium D 805 Processor 2.66GHz
(2) 512MB DDR400 PC3200 Memory (512MB x 1)
(1) 80GB IDE Ultra ATA 7200rpm Hard Drive
(1) 52X32X52/16X Combo Drive Black
(1) 104 Keyboard Black PS/2
(1) PS/2 Scroll Mouse Black

that's all I could find. It says ultra on the front I have an agp slot also

I think a new video card would be enough at the moment, although if I were you Id upgrade everything soon

That should play source games really well with a new video card.

Yeah a decent videocard and perhaps (recommended) another 512mb ram would do the trick.

I wouldn't recommend investing a great deal in that pc. A 7600GS (or GT) would do fine (means HL2 at high detail).

Are there any really good video cards that will run it and last me awhile? Recommendations?

The one that will last you the longest would be the x1950pro agp, but the rest of your system is going to bottleneck it. A 7600GS or 7600GT is the most you'll want to invest in that system. Go for a completely new system next time.

A 7600GS and another 512mb ram would (IMO) be the best upgrade.

he just got it last October. new pc doesn't mean greatest pc ever. 7600gs would be the best upgrade for you. i wouldn't recommend the x1950pro because it will defiantly bottleneck your pc and your psu in your computer may not handle the power requirements of it.

9800XT runs hl2 fine, I've found..why not just get that?

even so, get 9600XT, runs also perfect (full settings and resolution exept AA and HDR and Anastrophic)
