The complete Visual Studio 2005 package is free from Microsoft in "Express" version. Don't know what it means, but what worries me is that HL2's source code doesn't work when compiled under Visual Studio Express 2005.

There is a website with workarounds:
http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Compiling_under_VS2005
but the singleplayer code does not compile properly (or do the fixes work?).

Do you have any idea when SourceSDK will be compatible with VS2005? Or is there another free compiler, not mentioned on Valve Wiki?

Here's a word from Microsoft: "Microsoft is working closely with Valve to enable Visual C++ Express to work with a future Source SDK update. This should be available within the next month or two - check back here for the latest status." - but that was said over a year ago, or even more!

It's not the first time Valve have missed a release date and it certainly won't be the last. Maybe once Episode One is out they'll have time to give the SDK some love.
