SP mod for HL2--needs team members

I've been tossing around this idea for quite awhile now, and even posted something about this on one of the other forums. Most mods are multiplayer, and the ones that are single-player don't seem to carry much behind them. I want to create an sp mod that is extensive and epic; with colorful NPCs and a great storyline that continues the story of HL. But not in the traditional sense. It should be sorta like a "prequel" so that it takes place before the original. I already have the basic concept down. You work for the administrator, in fact you yourself are an administrative officer. I can't reveal where it takes place just yet, but the plot itself will have a distinguishable main storyline and many subsidiary ones.

Maybe coop would also be a good idea, but nothing is definite right now. But, as someone else suggested, parts of the mod could be created in the HL editor, then ported to HL2 when the SDK comes out. I think if you need a team you first need to. When you post a design document on what its about. What weapons, items, characters and story-line. You won't get much help if any without those. So I suggest posting the design here or you won't get much help.
 
I just got back from writing a mod article (one of several in a series) I hope you will read it (even though the first one is very basic)

I've heard about your idea before - many times before. Its not that new so I think you need to go back and rewrite some of the main idea.

One more thing, what do you do more than just writing?

This needs to be clarified a bit, you said you heard about my idea b4, are you talking specifically (where you work for the administrator) or generally (a mod that continues HL's storyline). Maybe I'm just ignorant, but I don't believe I've seen an HL mod that tries to explain the events b4 the original.

As for my other skills, I've done a little mapping in the past, but nothing extensive. Writing is my main skill...
 
There's been many mods, some bad some really bad that try to explain things before events in HL1. There's also mods that have events during from other perspectives. Many involve you working for the administration. They were the first mods that turned up, as they required the least amount of thought/work.

Reason you don't hear about them is in the first sentence.
 
Right, this makes sense I guess. I've had other ideas for an HL story, here are a few tell me if they are interesting/unoriginal

1: You are part of the survey team on Xen mentioned in the game, haven't really focused on this one too much.

2: This one takes place after the events in HL2, since it isn't out yet parts of the storyline can't be completed and are subject to change. Anyway, you are Gordon Freeman and after the threat of Combine is over, there is a discovery of a war machine created by them that produces genetically enhanced half-human beasts.

But they breed so rapidly that humanity fled to the old, underground installations of the Combine known as "District 11". As you awaken, you find out that your body was severly damaged and your consciousness uplinked to a clone body. This allows for you to recieve bodily enhancements, from cybernetic implants to Alien DNA. You have to trek to the surface, and somehow destroy the alien "Hive". Meanwhile, the underground world is now governed by a group of revolutionists; some say anarchy will spread. Its a little disjointed but thats the basic idea. Thoughts?.
 
The second one sounds better, but i will that this whole hl thingy is overdone. Maybe wanna write your own world?
 
I think the second idea is kinda as bad.. District 11... doesn't really show much thought gone into it "I know, they call it City 17 so lets have District 11, Culdesack 14, Avenue 3, One way traffic 82, Highway 6, Driveway 21............."

How about a mod based on events before HL1 where you actually play the exciting part of a trollyboy at the administrators office in Phoenix Arizona.

"temp" a HL2 mod

Arcade mode:
Each day you go to work and have to avoid being fired. Then one day all hell breaks loose at Black Mesa and you accidently find out about it so you have to do a runner on your lil scooter from the Feds

Or Simulation mode:
Same as above only you spend your time sorting paper work and delivering packages to other members of staff

I agree with Maj, make your own original story, its more fun. Why not do a WWII mod or CS clone or Neowhatever or Operation not again like everyone else? :)

Wow, I won't lie that hurt m8 :P. Seriously tho, District 11 is a working title. But beyond that how was the story?. Its not completely original in some spots but nothing nowadays can be completely original. I do plan to make a mod based on my own world, but I find it challenging to create a good plot addon to HL. And thats what I'm focusing on at the mo. Of course if there is little interest in the project, I'll eventually shift gears. Also, the ending totally roxx!!.

P.S.-I really like your temp mod idea, can I use it? :rolleyes:

Heh don't take it personally :)

As for stories.. Well I'd consider something like The Great and Secret show by Clive Barker as light reading. So I kinda expect serious amounts of depth, almost to the point of being anal. Even if 80% of that wont be immediately visible to the gamer, the fact that 80% will be in there for them to discover and interact with makes a huge difference in terms of replayability. Have stories cleverly intergrated with each other, almost RPG quest like only on a much lesser scale. For example mini games, you'd be playing the game, but regularly have options to break off from the real game and do something else for a bit. Like rescuing some civiliants or scientists and get some bonus object for doing that.. Things you don't HAVE to do to finish the game, but that you can do if you want.. Then gamers can go back an do and not do different things.. Maybe have these mini games with their own big monsters. So you could go through some other area's and rescue these guys, then come up against something nasty that otherwise you wouldn't have even known about. Beat that then shortly after your back on track through the main game again.. I think something like that would go down very well.. little secrets and extra's to entertain the player. That way you could still have a linear game but with enough mini sections to make it appear like they have a choice. I'd play it if it had that :)
