So, the SoaSE (Sins of a Solar Empire, nice acronym, eh ?) has me excited [again] about space games and I realise for the most part I never really got too into them, or not into too many of the not so well known ones so I'm looking for suggestions.

Ones I've played [extensively] are the likes of Descent:Freespace, Homeworld1, Freelancer, Nexus: The Jupiter Incident, and a few others. There are others I know of but never really got into and would like to, like X2, X3, Homeworld2, GalCiv2, etc - so suggest ones like that and others I have never heard of (I haven't heard of many so that won't be hard :)).

Age, so, the graphics, do not really matter to me. :)

The Civ4 mod that comes with Beyond the Sword. Damn, fun stuff. I massed out my building and became a god in like.. 50 turns. >:D

Tie Fighter!

Talking about dogfighting games, totally agreed. And let me add the original X-Wing! Awesome gameplay never seen again.
As for Elite-style trade-fight-think games, I purchased X2 and X3. The reviews are not good in terms of learning curve, but I see a lot of potential in the X series.

Yeah, I've played X3 and the learning curve is pretty big, never really had time to sit down and learn everything. Wish I could, maybe over xmas.

I never could get into Xwing, I admit I didn't try too much either. I first got Rebel Assault which sucked ass then I got Tie Fighter which rocked my world and seven 20$ joysticks.

If you get homeworld 2, make sure to try out the Point Defense Systems mod.

(anything 7.0 and lower is good, anything above 7.0 sucks beyond belief)

It's basically a mod that adds about 4 times the number of weapons onto every ship, and allows frigates to dogfight like fighters. It's very cool to just watch two battle frigates fight each other to the death. Oh and did I mention every ship (before 7.0), usually has a salvo of hundreds of tiny missiles?

Homeworld, Homeworld 2, and Sins of a Solar Empire.

The latest X3 patch makes it run like a dream for me, so I'd recommend that. Think Elite with trading/fighting/buying factories etc.

Freelancer

Whatever happened to the 2nd one :(

Infinity: Quest for Earth looks interesting. Its going to be a free MMO (last time I checked). To me, its seems like this will be MMO Elite; Yes you can land on planets and fly through its atmosphere; find the vids on youtubes

The last time I checked for updates they had a combat beta in the game. It is a skill based, as opposed to stats based, game.

Check it out HERE

Thirded for Tie fighter,

try and find x wing alliance as well, thats great game

What do you think about Darkstar One? It should be a pure Elite-style game, plain and simple.

To say it resembles Elite is blasphemy. It plays a bit like Freelancer, but it's not as good. Reasonable game though but don't expect anything special. There is a demo.

Isn't this the one thats being made by like one guy?

I tried the combat beta a while ago, and remember having this great dog fight with someone as we flew in and out of this huge asteroid near us. I ended up beating him by just flying better as he smashed right into a wall inside the thing. The planet thing is what is interesting me though :O

X-Wing Alliance and Homeworld series are both recommended by me.

WTB new Star Wars dogfighter

I think Freelancer is very underrated.
It had a great and engaging storyline along with simple yet very fun space battles.
I've tried similar games such as the X series and DarkStar One but they lack the depth and over all user friendliness that Freelancer offers.
Not to mention the great mods that Freelancer has.
I'd love to see a sequel for the game.

Homeworld: Catacylsm is better than Homeworld 2, IMO. Stupid story, but then so is Homeworld 2's when it's not ripping off the original.

Ripping off?

It's the same series!

You said you've played Descent: Freespace but have you played Freespace 2?

Because if you haven't you must. Immediately. Right now. This very second.

Homeworld, Homeworld 2, and Sins of a Solar Empire.

Pfft your missing Homeworld: Cataclysm. The game made by the guys working on Sins of a Solar Empire.

Isn't that the point of a sequel?

/sigh at silly people.

What? To add in some psuedo-mystical bullshit that wasn't in the original, or to lift the dialogue for key scenes verbatim from that original?

I thought the idea of a sequel was neither to clone sections of the game nor entirely bastardize its plotline, but evidentially, only a 'silly person' would think so (since for some reason, adding that to the end of your post was worthy of a post-edit). Homeworld 2 is not an examplar sequel. In fact, it's probably the most disappointing example I can think of.

HW2 is still damn fun though.

I find it tiresome to play through again, despite having completed it. There are a chunk of early missions that seem to be a lot, lot harder than the stuff that follows. I never got into the Multiplayer, but i'm not a big MP gamer anyway.

It's been done before. I don't see any reason to be peeved off about it. Come now really it's Homeworld there is no real plot. If theres anything even remotely like a storyline it's just there to justify massive space battles. That and to quiet the people that go "OMG your game has no story". You really should play HW2 Multiplayer it can become pretty epic with 8 players in a FFA match.

/edit so yeah you are silly. I find people that read too much into a simple story silly.

I absolutely love X3. Haven't played it in quite a while, but I'm getting the urge to pick it up again. Definitely a big learning curve and without cheating, takes a while to get to the point where you can afford fleets of ships. When I put it aside I had a self contained mega complex and enough personal factories to keep my fleet outfitted. My fleet had around 5 cap ships and probably 50 or so fighters. Man, just thinking about it, I might have to toss away the next few months of my life and play it again.

I loved Freespace 2. X-Wing and Tie-Fighter had me gripped for quite a while, but Freespace was in another league. At one point I had ambitions to make a mighty B5 mod as the engine/style was so suited - just think about it, the Shadows, First Ones, it would have been awesome - but having zero skills in this area that soon died :'(

A remake is far overdue.

IMO, Galaga (PS1) and Starwing (SNES) were awesome games. They posed good challenges and had great gameplay. Bricks were projectiled when I first played Starwing. As crappy as they were, I was not expecting 3D graphics on a SNES!

The simplicity of Homeworld's Story is its main charm. The feigned complexity of Homeworld 2's is its main fault.

Your ability to read things into my posts is more intriguing. I'm rather wondering what the hell you're on about.
