So, I'm totally addicted to the space stage of Spore, and I was wondering if there were any existing (or planned) games that are similar.

Likes:
-Finding systems with a planets that provide a good array of resources
-Claiming a single planet effectively claims the whole system
-Colonizing and terraforming planets in general
-Establishing alliances and trade routes
-Being able to focus on economic and diplomatic relations with minimal military effort
-Categorized rewards system that unlocks more powerful tools for the things you focus on

Dislikes:
-Allies do not automatically go to war with you - they only attack once
-Limit of 3 trading routes
-No automatic resource trading/market system

If I had any clue how to write a game, I'd do it myself, but unfortunately my programming knowledge is limited to windows forms applications, web sites and databases.

Are there any games that include the "likes" and rectify the "dislikes"?

EDIT: I used to play the text-based MMO Federation (http://www.ibgames.net/) and I loved it - but I would prefer a non-MMO as I prefer to not pay monthly fees, and I end up sinking way too much time into MMOs.

I haven't played Spore... but I too love this genre of game. I love the idea of space and trading in space.

Can't play any graphically intense games though, since I no longer have a good video card in my PC.

Sid Meier's Alpha centauri

whoops forgot it's confined to a single planet, if you want solar systems maybe check out Imperium Galactica(only tried the second one, don't know how the rest are)

maybe Eve is something for you, but it would take endless amount of time before you get good at trading. Right now im in a corporation that focuses on manufacturing and researching, and we have a sister corp that focuses on trading and selling the stuff trans galactic. Its very complicated and it takes time, and you are simply a small player in the whole organisation, so if you like doing things your way and being independend, its nothing for you.

You know... I've been thinking about it for the last uhm... 20 minutes, and I think I might be willing to try and develop a game. It would be a huge undertaking, and I'd undoubtedly need help of people who have game development experience... and I might have to learn C++, since I'm not sure how many people I'd be able to find to help that would know how to develop a game in .NET... but it would definitely be a fun undertaking.

EDIT: @Rav - I've subscribed to Eve 3 times now, and each time ended up leaving because everyone else had already been playing for 2, 4, then 6 (or whatever) years by the time I started. It's an awesome game, no question there - but it isn't exactly newbie friendly, and even less so for someone who would be at best a casual player.

EDIT2: Alright I'm totally going to try this. If you're interested in contributing, I've started a wiki at http://wiki.dandoes.net.

Space Rangers 2? I haven't played it in a while, but I'm pretty sure it meets most of your likes and dislikes.

X3 might be your cup of tea.

Yeah, that's ingame.

Galactic Civ? Hell, I don't know.

LOL at that image... it makes ogame seem more exciting than it really is. I've been playing ogame for a long time now, probably a year at least. I don't recommend it even though I'm still hooked because of my OCD, trying to get to the top.

I want a good space game. Haven't found one I like.

Simple controls

blow shit up

collect loot and/or xp

upgrade

blow up bigger shit

perfer top-down view, like Asteroids

modern graphics and sounds

Hmm, thanks. Not really what I'm looking for.

Something that plays more like Geometry wars. Great tight controls, fast paced, action... More acrade-like I should say, but with RPG elements

realistic graphics, a universe to travel, and the ability to go to the surface of planets, attacking cities and what-not. Awesome.

something like this, but with modern graphics.
Armada for the Dreamcast, around 2001:

the little ship in the center is you, but you can get better ships as you progress

sorry, not to jack the thread. If anyone knows of a game like that let me know, otherwise, lets get back on topic.

GalCiv2, Sins of a Solar Empire, Homeworld series, Star Wars: Empire at War, X series, and lastly a hidden gem, Evochron Renegades... you can even go on to planets.

I've always wanted to give Sins of a Solar a try, but I'm just too damned bad at sim games to even dabble anymore. I always get hyped, buy the game, play for a few minutes and realize that my a.d.d. and impatience will slay me before I make my first fortune, and quit.

Sad really. Luckily I've saved my money for anything but absolute must-buys lately. Hell, I haven't even bought Spore yet. Am I missing out majorly here?

Ive been playing it off and on for over 3 years now. Due to my time in iraq i have to restart in a new uni.

Hey I started a few weeks ago (Universe 10). Been a bit dull so far but I'm nearly at the point where I have the technology and resources/hour to do something. Calling it a "space trading game" would be wrong though, wouldn't it?

You picked and older uni, you should have picked uni 30-40.

Cool. I'm in universe 5 myself. I've worked my way to rank 369 out of about 3000, and this was an old server when I joined up.

I'm generating about 3 million metal, 1.3 million crystal, and 350,000 deuterium every 24 hours. So if you guys are serious about ogame, anytime you find yourself in my server starting out(doubtful), I will definitely help you get a huge starting boost!

Death stars... see, that's what I'm working towards. By myself, singly. I almost have the framework built for it, and then it'll just be a matter of solid straight 21 days of saving, and then finding a proper time to build the needed solar satellites so I can research it without people noticing it and attacking me and ruining my efforts. It'll be tough!

But once I have that research done, I have it done!

Do you know how many resources the death stars take?

EDIT: Found out my answer... 5 million metal, 4 million crystal, 1 million deuterium.

Luckly enough, my clan as over 22 members. We all have planets in the same system or the next system over. So backup incase of a raid is allways within a few minutes. The thing is that over 15 of us are making the push at the same time of if a few of us gets hit the others will have the death stars to fight back. :)

Ogame looks pretty cool, just signed up and worked on my planet.

My name is of course, xlucidx... I'm in Uni40.
