excuse my bad english, dont even knof if Spark in plural is Sparks or sparkles or whatever it is, well, im gonna say sparks, so you have to live with that :D

why is there so much sparks in HL2? its like.. smash a wodden crate into the wall, and theres sparks..

check in the beginning of traptown movie, where they guy playing picks up a cardboardbox with 2 tin's on it..... sparks! why?

another example

its driving me crazy, cant sleep at night, just laying thinking about those damn sparks :p

and again, excuse my sucky english :p

You just HAD to point that out to me, didn't u?

Now it's going to drive me crazy too... Oh, well, I kinda think that the sparks are pretty! :) hah... Maybe they'll have that fixed up a bit by the time of release, eh?

P.S. - It's sparks (good job) and your english wasn't too bad at all... Better than some of the people who's first language is English on boards like theses...

It's because the boxes have friction with the (presumably) metal table. A bit exaggerated because the objects don't move fast enough to produce sparks. But an effect like this (sparks when a metal object has friction) will look very cool on things like large containers rolling down a mountain or something. I think they just have to balance it out a bit so it won't happen with small objects like these.

yah, but cardboard on metal isnt supposed to create sparks, even if its thrown like 400km/h into some metal wall? :p cardboard is.... paper.. :p

Actually I think the reason why it sparks is the bullets going through the wooden door (they would in real life and if Source represents wood accurately, then it makes sense) and ricocheting off the metal canisters, causing the sparks. However, we shouldn't be able to see them as clearly as we do in that video; the reason we do is because it was an older version and it was a minor bug. You can see the exact same bug in effect a little bit after that when a Combine soldier shoots at that little metal sheet (just before Gordon throws a grenade under the dumpster) - it sparks just before it breaks. We shouldn't really be able to see it on the side Gordon was on, but it's a minor bug and I think it's been fixed now anyway.

exactly, i mean;

rocks+metal = sparks,
metal+metal = sparks,

regardless of friction, i mean like two jellybabies hit at 2,000,000,000miles an hour *SPARKS GALLORE* lol

They need to reconsider it :D

ps. i never noticed th amount of sparks in traptown!

if you're talking about realism, bullets should NEVER produce sparks. The type of materials that real bullets are made up of will never produce sparks like you see on movies, games, and etc.

Well im one of those ppl to say something like that ^ but i never realised, good job!!

Spark wise they are good lookin and fun :) imagine a game with 100% realistic features... friggin boring lol

Fair enough, but what I was referring to was that it was a similar effect to what happened if you shot certain metallic objects in Half Life 1 (eg: Barney's helmet). It was exactly the same spark, as it was a placeholder (the same way the blood spurts from the zombies in the Docks video were exactly the same as HL1 because they were placeholders too)
Maybe they won't spark in the final version, but I was just pointing out that they were the the same, and that sparks aren't caused by the metal rubbing up against a wooden door.
Besides, whilst the material physics system is supposed to be realistic it doesn't mean they won't exagerrate certain things (like sparks for example) to make it look more dramatic, etc.

um, when was the last time you've rubbed two metal objects together and gotten a spark... besides flint and steel?

uh yeah, cos flint is metal....

I think it was when I was driving down the freeway to school, and an F-350 dropped its driveshaft into the road and I hit it at 70 mph :imu:

That made a few sparks, and a sickening crunching metal sound. My head was under the dash (I ducked :p) and I looked up and saw the sparks, so I can only imagine what it was like where it actually hit (just below the headlight on a Toyota Tacoma - I think where I saw the sparks was like 3 or 4 feet away from where it hit O_O)

Sparks really occur, and they're pretty spectactular. Of course, when you're hoping the 100 pound chunk of metal doesn't pierce the front of your truck and enter the cabin, you aren't thinking of such things :D

Flint's not a metal.

And I got sparks once when sharpening a knife with one of those sword-looking sharpeners.

i find the sparks. I do not know the word from english

in farsi we say "Mekla"

like .. bothr i find the sparks like bothr to me. i do not like

I think the phrase is they annoy you, or bother you.

Lol, I like it how ppl have replied to this with 'flint isn't a metal' lol!

I'll just take it to mean you meant rubbing flint+flint and metal+metal :dozey:

I havent seen the sparks that clearly in the 2004 video so I guess they got that fixed,
altrough they havent fixed the bug that caused the sparks to see trough solid objects bug.. i guess that was one of the bugs they had to fix before they can send their mastercd copy to vivendi

how hard can it be to get rid of the spark through props bug...

If anyone has ever shot an AK47 at night, you'd know it makes a quite a few sparks when it hits metal (especially on fully automatic.)

I pulled the sparks comment outta my ass. I don't know for sure, but I'd say they're placeholders. It's common thing to do. Remember the zombie blood spatters in the old binks?

You would be suprised what can make sparks.

I was helping cut down a large tree-limb(more like half of a 40ft tree) after storm a week or two ago. We were trying to bring it down so it didnt land on the barb-wire fence.

Well long story short we were unsuccseful and when that sucker hit the fence...sparks flew everywhere.

All it takes is a bit of friction. If you have ever drilled a knot in piece of wood you also know it can produce sparks.

So i can see a steel bullet making a spark in some extremly hard wood.

in al karaknu were i and allieds apartment are in the city, ak47 is shot lot in happy time. i see not a lot sparks so i know nut

Well it's just little superhot pieces of material flying off stuff isn't it? Anywhere where that could happen, you could get sparks.

NB. That space shuttle where a piece of soft, light foam hit the ceramic shields on the wing and caused sparks and flame.

Ok so it was going pretty damn fast, but you see my point...

Oh, btw, they said they were fixing this a long time ago :)

your name i dont know why made my allied in apartment in a .. mad way feelings.. he just sais look at the name and i will know but english is hram. so i know nut why. why?

its hard to simulate object with traction and friction on top of each other.

Herzai Who's name makes your "allied in apartment" mad ways feelings?

It's prolly a bug with the material system. Valve must have fixed it.

I dunno :)

Maybe he thinks Crusader only has one meaning which pertains to Holy Wars many hundreds of years ago.

Maybe he doesn't know enough English to understand it simply means someone who struggles for a cause. And that it sounds kind of cool.

Dictionary.com

Crusade

3. A vigorous concerted movement for a cause or against an abuse

Either way, he shouldn't be mad about it. :(

i am not mad an can be allieds even to. he wont hear it tho, he hates fast

Hehe, I'm sorry he hates fast, then :)

How long have you been learning English by the way?

Shooting metal objects even with a rifle doesn't cause sparks (It's very rare!).
