No, they put the Spartans in because they were the foremost military society around for hundreds of years of near-constant wars and skirmishes with their neighbours and fought the local superpower, Persia while immensely outnumbered.

There's nothing obvious about it. Both the spartan and the ninja are heavily trained soldiers just in different ways.

The decisive factor was the shield and body armor. It was like putting the ninja up against a ****ing tank.
