Interactive Data Visualization (IDV) today announced that SpeedTree, its hardware independent foliage solution, has been integrated with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3. Unreal Engine licensees will now have access to SpeedTree’s advanced content creation options, enabling them to quickly and efficiently populate game environments with highly detailed trees and foliage.

My question is: will Source be able to compete with this? It's pretty heavy! :afro:

Short answer? No.

I don't mean this generation of Source, but an upgraded version, used for HL3. Unless the answer on that is "No." too :p

It's nothing very ground breaking. It's just a shortcut instead of manually creating foliage.
*shrugs*

Maybe not groundbreaking, but extremely useful, especially integrated (as it is) into the engine/editor.

I don't know if it is legal for source to do something like this.

Speedtree could be implemented into Source... It's just middleware... It's also in Elder Scrolls IV The Oblivion.....

Also was in UE 2.x I believe, so it's not like they weren't going to use it :P

Crappy? You know how long that would take to manually model/texture into the game?
:rolling:

I do......but I'm really picky when it comes to gameing grafics ;).

Graphics?
Find me better trees and foliage (other than Oblivion).

Far Cry's foliage - they were so proud of their work they made the whole game absolutely full of it!!!

Looks pretty damn good to me. Someone should make a plugin to use garry's mod in Hammer. Heh.. is that even possible?

Um.... what?

UE3 has the best vegetation I think I've seen yet :D

speedtree is insane, its entirely procedural. it would be like a tree entity where you would pick whatever optiosn u want for the tree (branches, type of bark, etc). its fully possible to integrate it in source, just get your hands on the full source code and a heafty sum of money for the speedtree liscense.
ue3 is uncomparable to source, the graphics r insane. only runs on the 6800.
